This is really starting to make me want to drop my HD channels. Why even bother recording a show on the hd channel when every other time the same show is broadcast it is stretched.

Why does the same NEW show one episode go from true full screen hd to the next episode stretched hd with black bars at the top and bottom?

That drives me really crazy. More than black bars on the side. I really don't mind black bars on the side. I can do a partial zoom and fix it.

If there was only a zoom option to eliminate the bars at the top and bottom. Come on DISH, PLEASE ADD THIS ADDITIONAL ZOOM OPTION!!!!!!!

DIRECTV has the origional resolution broadcast format and you can put it in native resolution and let the tv do the stretching to make it look the best on your picture. DISH needs this too. The only downside is that when you change from a true hd channel at 720 or 1080i to 480p , the screen goes black while the receiver puts it into the new resolution. So channel changing may take longer than 4 seconds. Switching from a 480p to 480p or a 1080i to 1080 is no problem at all.

The primary reason i NEVER watch TBS.

Lucky for me my favorite "cable-like" channels - Discovery, science, NatGeo, and Discovery HD Theater - do not tend to stretch anything.

I'm with you, they zoom the SD stuff. That, to me, is much easier for me to stomach than a stretch... I really wish History and A&E would go back to the pillar bars on SD stuff

If you are talking about the horizontal black bars (letterbox), then you are either watching a movie that has an aspect ratio wider than 16:9 or the settings are wrong on your reciever/tv. You can manually stretch those out further with the reciever (and some tvs), but it makes the picture quality worse. I have just come to realize that "full screen" will not always be available and is not always the best quality picture.

History HD seems to be the most notorious at this. I usually have to fumble with my Harmony remote to set the tv at 4:3 to compress the image horizontally.

I wouldn't mind the black bars at all as the 4:3 HD image is still a lot better than SD. They should take a page from ESPN and display side banners if they're so particular about it.

Agreed!! This way everyone has their option.
Once the channel stretches it , its garbage.

The survey quoted just shows you can get any results you want with the right sampling and questions. I suspect if you surveyed SatelliteGuys members you would get an absolutely different result. Overwelming against strech-o-vision.

Not wrong. They were zoomed movies. And I do know the difference. I haven't watched them lately though so I don't know if they have gone back to stretching or not.

Well I figured out how to fix this problem. I put the sat in 480P 16X9 mode, set the TV to Component 1 input and zoom the TV. The picture is still clear, but not as good as full HD. So now stretched 16X9 content is zoomed vertically and none of the image is cut off. YEAH!!! I would still like to have dish network put a zoom vertically option. It would be easier.
