CBS to Launch Microseries Experiment

By Christopher Lisotta
In what the network calls a "prime-time programming experiment," CBS will launch an advertising-sponsored week-long "microseries" titled "The Courier" on Tuesday, Jan. 24, during the first-act break of the procedural drama "CSI: Miami," which begins at 9 p.m. (ET).

The serialized short film will be broadcast at about the same time each night in various shows. The seven short episodes will premiere with a 60-second installment, with subsequent editions running 40 seconds.

After its premiere, "Courier" will normally run in the first-act break after 9 p.m. on six nights over eight days (excluding Saturday, Jan. 28, and Tuesday, Jan. 31), with its finale on Wednesday, Feb. 1 during "Criminal Minds." On Sunday, Jan. 29, "Courier" will air immediately following "Cold Case."

"Courier" follows a mystery man named "iiro" who races against time to uncover clues and perform a sequence of dangerous tasks to rescue his kidnapped wife.

CBS.com will offer each segment for viewing after it has been broadcast and will flesh out the microseries' narrative via online video and text components. In addition, CBS.com will offer a second, interactive story line with its own set of clues, which offers viewers the opportunity to enter a sweepstakes to win a Pontiac Torrent.

Immediately following its network broadcast, each episode will also be available for streaming on cellphones on the Verizon Wireless V Cast service.

The series is sponsored by Pontiac, which will have a commercial for its Torrent at the end of each micro-episode. The Torrent will also be integrated into three of the seven broadcasts.
