Cancelling Service and Setting up Service with Different Name

I am currently a dish sub and I need to change the SS number that he account is linked to. Currently it is in my mother-in-law's name/ss, even though I pay the bills. Dish refuses to let me change it so I am going to go ahead and cancel and then set up a new account...
I have a couple of questions though:

1. Will I still be treated as a new sub? IE I want to get the new HD-Only package.
2. Will an installer have to come out and take away my dish, only to come out a couple of days later to install?
3. If he doesn't come get my dish, will he come out to install a dish points to 61.5(since my locals were put on that bird and dish currently wants me to pay $60 for them to come out and install the dish)?
 
If you cancel dish wants the receivers and lnb(s) back. The dish antenna they dont care about. Typically they send prepaid boxes back for the receivers to go in.

If you sign up with your ssn then yes you would be a new customer and they would bring out new recivers and install whatever dish components you would need to make it work. It depends on what programming you decide to go with.
 
Do it. I did it recently because Dish forced me to do so. Anyway, you'll get new equipment, new discounts, etc. You should sign up through Dish Store. We did and got a check for $125. We also upgraded from a 622 to a 722 and got a 2nd DVR for only $99.
 
Dish usually doesn't even ask for the LNB back anymore... if they do, just say it is in an unsafe place and they will waive the return. They will want the receivers back of course.

You should get a new Dish when you sign up again... I didn't notice where you were but you might get a EA dish out of this... they should be able to use your existing Dish mount and cabling, assuming they can put struts up.

For a seamless transition I would most definitely NOT cancel existing service until new one was installed, anything can happen. New order cannot be processed for whatever reason, rescheduled a couple of times weeks apart, installer says you don't have a line of sight(even though you do) or can't do the job for some other reason. Even though the chance of things going sour are slim, you just never know and should take appropriate steps to ensure a hassle free transition.

Don't do that to Claude (unless he says it's OK). Dish has been cracking down on retails who willingly allow this sort of thing to happen. I'd hate to see Metro25 on the list of terminated retailers. New customer promotions are for new customer's ONLY.

There are a number of questions which need to be answered which will have an impact.
Do you own the receivers? If so they can be transfered to you and you will need to have open a new account. If they are leased they will always be under the current subscribers SS# and will need to be returned.
Is the current account under some sort of commitment. If so you should not change any thing because they will have to charge the early termination fee. So wait until the commitment ends.
Do not cancel the old account until the new receiver are installed, allow the tech to determine which dish configuration would be best for your location, (the newest and greatest is not the best thing. The 1k4 dish is new and will have bugs which will need to be sorted out.)

You are a new customer, just because you have equipment in the existing house it is not the same account. If I go to a home for for a new connect and the dish is on the roof and the lines have been run that would not mean that the customer is an existing customer.

This seems contradictory.... either that or I need more coffee. When a dish installer gets to my new house, the lines will be there. Because I ran them. That particular house has never had dish service. I was considering setting it up as a new account so I could get the dishes installed before the snow flies and then canceling service at my current house when we sell it. The new house has a new address, new phone number, and my sons are living there now (I wanted both houses occupied while we get ready to sell the old house). So if THEY ordered it, it would have a different name and SSN as well.

That would seem to me to be a legitimate NEW install.
 
It's a non-issue. He said the service is currently in his mother-in-laws name and he wants to sign up in his name.

But people are arguing he could get a whole bunch of new customer incentives, although he will still be receiving the same service. While he may have a better spirit than those just trying to take advantage of the system, isn't this exactly what Dish is cracking down on?
 
When I moved from Florida a few years ago my account was in my wife's name. We had put the account on hold paying a small fee per month. When I had dish installed in my new house I wanted HD and was told I was an existing customer and would not get new sub discounts. I opened an account in my name and after install I close the account in my wife's name. I was a new sub. Got all discounts. They sent boxes for our old receivers. No Problems.

What part of that says he is a new customer? He says himself he is a current sub. He is not adding an account, he is just changing the name.

Hey, if Dish says they easiest way is to set up a new account is the best way, fine. Just I don't think he should have a retailer do it to reap a whole bunch of new subscriber benefits.

You may have problems getting a new account at that address because dish will check for an existing account at that address, if there is an existing account dish will not install another account to that address. Also if you used a credit card to pay the bill it will be rejected also, you must use another credit card number.

What did I miss?

He currently gets service.

He uses it, i.e. it is not primarily his mother in law's

There is a dish on his house

He pays the bills

He is not moving

Only thing is it's in his mother in laws name. This is speculation, but I imagine it's because he had bad credit and need a better score to get service. Now he has patched it up and wants more improvement, so he want's his good payment record to show an his SSN. The only difference is the name on the bill.

Just because he can do something doesn't make it right. All I'm saying is it would be wrong to get new customer upgrades and discounts if you are not a new customer.
 
Do they still want the LNB back?

When I order Dish, the person told me I only need to return the receivers and remote. Nothing about LNB. And, it is impossible to get the LNB since it is on way way high.
