Can you use a marine satellite TV system in Canada?

Psst… want to know a secret? The hottest new product for boats isn’t what you think it is. Yes, there’s some new tech out there that’s getting snapped up. But believe it or not, the big seller at Solid Signal this year isn’t internet for your boat. That’s great and you absolutely consider it. But, more and more people are going back to good old satellite television. Why? Because internet plans for boats aren’t unlimited. You could use up your entire data allotment in 4 days or less if you stream a lot of video. Live satellite TV gives you everything you want for one low price, and it’s incredibly reliable.

The real question

That’s what’s led you to this article. You’re probably looking for a new satellite TV system for your boat and you’re interested in whether it will work for you. So, let’s get into the facts.

Satellite television broadcasts can’t “stop” right at the border or right at the shore. In order to make sure that everyone in the US can get the satellite TV they want, it’s necessary to overshoot the borders and coasts by a fair bit. Remember, these satellites are 22,000 miles over the earth and while they can be aimed very precisely, there’s going to be a bit of extra area that they cover. It’s inevitable, and it’s what lets you watch satellite TV up to 100 miles offshore.

The same thing applies to foreign countries. Now, I have to tell you here that your terms of service say you will use satellite TV in the US, and in the US only. That’s its intended use and I am absolutely not supporting any other use. But from a technological point of view, yes, a lot of US satellite TV signals spill dozens of miles into Canada. Regardless, you’ll need a US service address and billing address to get US satellite TV. There’s no getting around that.

What can you do if you want satellite TV service in Canadian waters?

Generally speaking, most satellite systems from Intellian and KVH will work with Bell, Canada’s satellite provider. Bell uses almost the exact same technology as DISH uses in the US. That makes it easy to say that if it works for DISH, it will probably work for Bell also.

However, Solid Signal is a US company. We offer DIRECTV and DISH service and we can’t help you with Bell. We may be able to help you with the satellite antenna itself, though. If you’re in a US port and want a new satellite system, our experts can recommend the right dome for the job. We have over 20 years of marine satellite experience and we’re here to help!

Our marine team is here to answer your questions during East Coast business hours. We don’t operate 24/7 because we have a genuine, US-based team and we think that’s a benefit. Our folks will help you choose the right hardware, and if you want US service even on a month-to-month basis we’ll help you get it. Call the experts at 888-233-7563 or fill out the form below. You’ll be glad you did.
