Can you take an old dish off the house and use it on a tripod when you travel?

Here’s another question that came from our customers. As I understand it, a customer wanted to travel around and take their satellite TV with them. So far so good – satellite TV is a great add-on for RVers. It’s more reliable than streaming and it’s a great value. Of course it’s an even better value if you don’t have to pay for equipment.

Our customer said that they knew someone with a dish on the roof that they were willing to take down. This dish could go to our customer, who would put it on a tripod and use it for satellite TV. They wanted to know if this would work. We’re pleased to say, “Yes, this will work” but there are a few things you should be aware of.

First and foremost, the dish might not work

Considering their relatively low price and the amount of complex electronics, it’s pretty amazing how long they last. But everything breaks eventually, and if this satellite dish has been up in the elements a while it simply may not work.

You’ll need the right size mast or…

Most tripods come with a mast that’s got a 1.25 outer diameter. This isn’t right for satellite. Check this tutorial to see which size mast you need, then shop at solidsignal.com for the right one. Another option is to use the mount that the dish was using on the roof and this pole-to-pole adapter. It will let you attach the entire mount to a new mast.

Are you good at aiming?

Aiming a satellite dish is easy once you get used to it, and there are any number of YouTube videos to show you how to do it. But keep in mind the first time you do it, it’s probably going to take you about an hour. With the proper satellite meter and some experience, you can probably get that down to about 15 minutes.

You’ll save money but is it really the best choice?
