The reason that it is designated as a player is that it doesn't record. If it were able to record, it would be called a "Blu-Ray recorder". Same difference as that between a DVD player and a DVD recorder although I'm not sure whether they will bother with the tuner. Can you record TV shows on your Blu-ray player (mine is integraded in the PS3) didn't figure out how to do it yet, is it even possible?
The Europeans use a decidedly different digital broadcasting standard, so it would be more than a subtle change to adapt such a unit.It won't burn a BD. In Europe, they are selling a TV tuner add-on, so it becomes a DVR. Might make it's way to the U.S.
It seems very odd to me that they debut a product like that in a market with very little HD penetration. HD seems to be taking forever to catch hold on the other side of the pond.I meant the concept might make it's way to the U.S. But plenty of ATSC 8VSB chips are available to choose from.
Given the difficulty in getting content to such a device, I'm dubious that they will catch on.There are Blu-Ray recorders, so far all PC addons. At some point in the future someone will endoubtably release one similar to the current DVD recorders.
