Hi, guys. I was wondering if you could help me out. With a lousy economy going on, jobs are hard to come by. Right now, I'm unemployed living with my mother and grandmother after my grandfather passed away about 3 yrs. ago. Since I was going to College, both my grandparents became ill. My grandmother had stomach cancer which she survived, Yellow johndis (sp), my grandfather had quadrouple by-pass surgery. With the help of my mother, we both took care of them plus I was going to College.

The point of this post is that when all that was going on over the yrs. I started to formulate ideas. A couple I cant say on here because it has to do with television shows and this is a sports site. I did have an idea that maybe you guys could help me with. What would you guys think of a classic sports network?
Their should be a network for classic games. I know you have NBAtv, Nhl Network, NFL Network and cough, ESPN Classic among others. My point is their should be a network that shows games in their entireity. I mean when you get a classic game you have plays not shown and edited down. No pregame or postgame or halftime. No intros. on some of the games. If you look at NFL Network-it's a joke. Check their schedule for the next 3 days. It's a joke. Oh yeah, the next 3 days because that's how far their schedule is online. In other words, they have up until Jan. 6. I would like to see the old days-Scott, Summerall, Madden, Gowdy, Scully etc. In one of my posts that I did, somebody responded and said that the NFL has 10,000 games but where are they? Now it looks like I'll be losing the NFL Network and I dont even have the MLB Network.Do you think I'm making a mountain out of a molehill? I mean, I'm only 26 yrs. old so I missed some of the legendary announcers. Should I be penalized for that? If I had money and people who agreed with me I would start my own network. Do you think I'm nuts for saying their should be a network for classic games? What do you think?

Before I get your opinion about it, here are some of the ideas I've floated around in my head about some shows I'd put on the air.

Besides stating the obvious showing classic games in general, here are the titles and what they would be about that I would show:

Behind the Scenes at The NFL (Pretty self explanatory)
Football Nation (Would be like SportsCentury with more old clips and insight)
This Is...(History of each NFL Franchises)
Super Bowl Logos,Ratings, Commericals (Behind the scenes of all 3 things)
This is Super Bowl... (Original Broadcast and film clips with participants of that Super Bowl in a roundtable discussion)
The Rivalries ( Classic Rivalries are shown with original flim clips and original footage. This would be for all the major sports)
The stadiums (History of each stadium and/or Arena)
This is the History... (Ex. 1996 Yankees, 2002 76ers, 1999 Spurs etc.)
This Week in Baseball (The real one not that one they show now)
Classic Hockey Rivalries, Baseball Rivalries, etc.

Also, dont forget Classic NFL, NBA, NHL, etc. games. Not that 2 hr. watered down stuff you see. The whole game. Let MLB,NBA, NFL Networks worry about the present and future. My network will worry about the past.
This isnt spam or anything. Its just some ideas I've had for a while. I figure I would run it by this site because, well, this is a sports site and would really like your opinon. Just try not to be too brutal and I'll take suggestions for shows if you have any.

Love the idea Mets. IMO, this is what ESPN Classic should have been. If there was a channel based on your ideas though, I'd definitely tune in. :up

HD, I appreciate the support. I mean sometimes these classic channels really get on my nerves.

There might be TONS of copyright stuff to go through for it, but it sounds like a winner to me. As HD said, this is what ESPN Classic should have been.

Good luck!

Mets,
you're right on with this idea, buddy! :up

The worst thing that happened was when "Classic Sports Network" morphed into ESPN Classic.

Now, instead of seeing the old "Homerun Derby" reruns, we see endless hours of poker!

I whole heartily agree with Mets82. ESPN Classic is a joke. They never show a full game or rarely anyway. I just recently watched and recorded a UK/Stanford game from the 1998 Final Four. A good chunk of it was edited out because it didn't fit the two hour time frame. Since when does classic sports have to fit in any timeframe?!?
I enjoy watching the old games that haven't been edited down. NFL has a few but could do a lot more, especially in the off season. The Big Ten Channel does well with their classic basketball games and MASN shows a good number of old college basketball games and a few old Orioles games.
Yes I would watch quite a bit if there was a channel like you have described. But I doubt there ever will be because of copyright problems.

I think it's a great idea in theory, but with the previously mentioned proliferation of leagues starting their own networks, getting all that programming would be almost impossible, or at least very expensive.

In a cost-cutting move, the schedule (as of December, 2008) is largely composed of ESPN original programming, highlighting sports such as poker, bowling, and boxing, with less emphasis on re-airing classic games of major-league sports such as NBA, NCAA, NHL, NASCAR, MLB, and NFL games.

Many of the major sporting events once aired on ESPN Classic are available on NBA TV, NFL Network, NHL Network, MLB Network, Fox College Sports, and Versus, among other channels.

In theory, it is a great, albiet not new idea...but in reality it "aint gonna happen"!!!...

There are too many copyright restrictions on most all of these "classic" games and that is what happend to the original CSN (Classic Sports Network) which was morphed into ESPN Classic.

Most of the major sports leagues finally reailzed what they were sitting on with the classics and pulled them from "public use" when they weren't the ones making the money airing them. Now that most of the major sports leagues have their own networks, and can use them to fill time, if for no other reason. They own the copyrights and that isn't going to change anytime soon.

Sorry, I really don't mean to rain on your parade, but you need to realize that you are not being "penalized" just because you are young!!!...:(

I always felt like ESPN Classic should have been the way I've described my would be channel. I remember, I think, in 1998, when they were asking people to "Save the Classics" and they would have all these classic clips of old games and shows. It turns out it was ESPN who didnt save the classics.

Yes, it would be expensive with all the copyright issues and such, but ESPN has a ton of cash. They make it hand over fist. Instead of investing the money in World Series of Poker or Soccer or whatever the hell they show, invest in something that people would be worth watching. I mean ESPN Classic just gave up. Instead of trying to compete and take an interest with there channel, they just gave up. They should have never done that.

I would watch in a heartbeat Mets!!

And Bill, your are absolutely right! This is what happens when there is no competition!

AND....as much as people like to PLAY poker....I would think I am in the majority when I say NO ONE wants to see it on tv around the clock!

Right on, Salsa! :up

I like to PLAY poker with the guys.......not WATCH it, especially from 10 years ago!

Mets82 you know you have my support . . . pisses me off that during off season, SNY here in CT, would not broadcast some of the classic games even though they were listed in the guide :( :( :(

Now ESPN Classic is running "Before they were Superstars" today because of the NFL Draft. Showing classic College Football games is fine highlighting the stars but ESPN is showing there games in 2 hr. intervals. Do you know what channel the games are from? ESPN/ABC!!!!

Well, I'm one day from the NFL Network being taken off Comcast. I think its going to be replaced by, get this, the Church Channel!!! Are you kidding me? You wont see the MLB Network on there, though. Thats why I would like to create my own channel, so I would be in control.

I mean dumping football for the Church Channel. Absurd. And to boot not even get the MLB Network!!! I mean, come on!!
