Hi, I have a Direct Tv slimline oval dish with integrated lnb's. The model on the lnb's is AU9. We get 97% level but only 1-8% quality. My husband is tryiong to get the 97.0 channels for the arabic channels. We have the coolsat 5000 reciever. Will this set up work and what are we doing wrong if it will OR can we change the lnb. We read somthing about circular and linear. This says integrated but we are lost. Please hlp!!! ASAP

DirecTV uses a Circular Signal, FTA uses a Linear signal.
You need a Linear LNB for those channels.
One thing, a new LNB will not fit properly, you will have to come up with a way to mount it.
Are you "Handy"?

No

The satellite was a freebie from a friend and we bought the reciever, We are extremely new to the Fta and my husband wanted it so bad. He is from Morocco and wanted programming from home. A few other families in our area have it as well and paid over $300 for the set-up. My husband is a do-it - yourself kind of guy so we are trying. After spending from 2pm to 11pm in the frigid cold last night trying to figure this out I decided to do some homework. So what I had learned up to this point is that we needed a linear lnb. We weren't sure if the dish would work or if we would need a new one. We weren't out of anything to try it. I am so confused with all of the where to point it, azimuth, 97w stuff I don't know what all of this means. I looked it up but not being technical at all I am just lost.

I decided to do some homework.
Very important.

FTA is not a Plug-N-Play system, but once you understand the basics, it's not hard either.
But starting out with a modified Dish is probably not easiest.

You could start by getting the proper LNB and Bracket...
FREE TO AIR LNB LNBF Dual Single DSS Standard and Universal
HOLDERS FOR LNB LNBF Dual Single DSS Standard and Universal

And if that doesn't work, you could get the proper dish, and use the part you already purchased....

I was going to edit in these two more links to my post above, but I see there has been discussion on this thread:

How to locate a new LNB in the proper place when replacing it:

DefCon4 puts SuperDish LNB on DirecTV Slim Line:

And if you cannot find any of the above equipment, SatelliteAV (one of our Gold Sponsors) has an eBay bargain right now on a 36" dish with LNB.

THANKS

We have been on the Sadoun website and it has been helpful. Although I am completely blind it is rather fun. I think my husband is too impatient and wants to try it NoW. I think he was jumping up and down when he got the reciever. He was so excited. So since it is the weekend he figured he would try to WinG it on his own, sorry to say without much luck. I think we are just gonna have to buy something else. He has a couple of co-workers looking for him the right dish/lnb's. I would really like to save this dish though. It is really nice and the mount is very nice. I must pat ourselves on the back for a job well done there. He did say the modifying the head to fit wouldn't be a problem and for him it wouldn't be. He can fix anything as far as that goes. He just can't figure this out. Maybe once we get the right head we'll have more luck. I wanna thank you guys so much. You have been soooo helpful.

mojabeur: I encourage you to keep the Slimline for an FTA project even if you get another setup. As a link above describes, I used the first-generation DTV HD dish (the AT-9) for my first FTA project. I also have a Slimline (which is the second generation DTV HD dish), but I haven't had a chance to try it out. I think that a good lnb and proper alignment are important when using a small dish, but the fine controls on these dishes make it pretty easy. I recommend that you follow basic mounting and installation instructions for getting your mast well secured and perfectly plumb (you can probably find the manual for this dish by googling - it has more info than you need). You will be very happy when you successfully complete your first do-it-yourself FTA project.

Good advise

My husband said cool. He wanted to know if you know of any good web sites for us for this project. I think he really wants to do this because it will be a good learning project for him. We went to Radio Shack to nose around (being Sunday) but everything they had was circular and very limited selection. We have determined this will have to be done online so he'll just have to be patient. He is really into it.
Oh and (Lookup) he was very impressed with the pics of your set ups!!!

The Satelliteguys site will be your best source of information - take some time to scout around all of the discussion topics and use the search function to find help on your specific topics of interest. It sounds like the main items you need are an lnb and mount. I got my initial supplies on eBay (I like the Tracker II+ 0.2dB lnb, and you can find a few suppliers of mounts similar to what I showed in my photos of the AT-9 set up). The Satelliteguys sponsors can also get you what you need with a little more personalized service. Pay some attention to the basics to prevent problems (use proper grounding of dish and cable, turn power off when attaching coax for lnb or switches, use a surge protector, etc). These are easy measures to implement during installation and will likely save you from trouble later on.

My Colorado location is good for 97W. I tried to check the Ku signal strength map on Lyngsat.com for Galaxy 19 (at 97W) to compare with east coast signal strength, but they didn't have it up yet (apparently because this satellite just went into service to replace Galaxy 25 last November?). Maybe someone else knows another source for this info. For me, M2 Morocco is of intermediate strength/quality, so I would hope that you could get it with your AU-9 dish.

Good luck!

here's what I found

I found a Lnb but I wanted an opinion before I buy

ROC
Standard Linear Single LNBF
Model: CSS11G
I.F.: 11.7 GHz-12.75 GHz
L.O.: 10.75 GHz
Noise: 0.3 dB

Will this be alright?
