Money's a little tight right now. But when I can, I want to get a DirecTV TiVo DVR. I know some of you don't like the TiVo, but I want it for the TiVo Suggestions and the "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" options plus I love my TiVo Roamio and wouldn't mind if it was based on old technology. I would like it to have over-the-air stations as well, but I think somebody told me an AM21 won't work with it. Now I don't think it's a big deal, but I would like to know if it can but I don't want to waste my money on something that won't work. Will it?

Make sure to read a bunch about that THR22 before you buy. Most say it is slow and outdated (even said that when it was first released). Also they charge $6 extra as a Tivo fee each month - on top of your receiver fee per box, DVR fee per account, and HD fee per account.

So adding a THR22 adds $12.50 to your bill each month, not $6.50.

Not sure if this is relevant or not but you would need 2 am21s to get ota on both receivers just so you know. Only a client would inherit the ota channels from the genie. Also I wouldn't bet money on an am21 working with a tivo unless I specifically saw two paired. The tivo runs different software than the hrx series. I've never seen ota built into a tivo.

Not saying it doesn't work but only that I've never seen one work. And reminding that tivos run different firmware.

solidsignal says it does work (but then again doesnt the HR20 have OTA built in already)??

Compatible with all current DIRECTV receivers and DVRs including H21, H23, H24, H25, HR20, HR21, HR22, HR23, HR24, HR34, HR44, and THR22 (TiVo).
Yes the HR20's had a built in OTA tuner ...
I was thinking that the HR20s was the last ones to have it, maybe not, I don't remember, it's been quite awhile since I had my 20 .... I never cared for the HR 21-23s, then the HR24s came out and that was very good. Huge improvement over the previous units.

Yes the 20 series was the last to have it integrated

Directv teamed up with Tivo to make Genies with a Genie version of Tivo's operating software. Both Tivo's and Genie's are similar in many ways. Both get there TV channel database from the same source as well and if you go to Tivo's home site you can click on the available local channels link and see the channels you should be able to get with the AM21 Tuner for your area.
