Comcast Corp. customers will pay more for their cable television service starting in January.
The state's largest cable company announced this week that rates in Pierce County for basic cable service - the most common option, which includes A&E and Food Network - will increase an average of $2.24 per month, from $36.67 to $38.91 per month, said Comcast spokesman Steve Kipp.
Customers who subscribe to limited basic, the most affordable cable television package that includes the broadcast networks, will see no adjustment in their monthly bills. The average price will remain $12.99 per month.
"Comcast's Tacoma/Pierce County market prices reflect the increased value of the service, including availability of more programming choices, improvements in customer service and investments in technical upgrades that improve the reliability and quality of the company's cable television service," Kipp said in a statement.
Kipp said that since acquiring AT&T Broadband in November 2002, Comcast has added more than 200 customer service representatives to its call centers in the state and spent more than $200 million to build and maintain its digital fiber optic network.
The company also launched high-definition television and Comcast On Demand, he said.
He would not comment any further about the rate increase.
Customers will be notified of the rate increase through notices distributed in cable bills.
