Cable Guy screwed up my directtv

So I was in the process of switching over from directv to local cable. This is a new home so we just got cable ran to our electric pole and buried running to the house. The cable install tech unhooked my directv outside , came inside and before he hooked up the new cable box he tested the cable line in my home. He instantly said my cable lines inside the home are shot and need replaced because they are losing too much signal . He said it was probably caused by the directtv frequencies or something of that nature. He hooked back up whatever he had unhooked outside for my directv and left. I’m in the process of arguing with them now to get someone back out to fix whatever they did because now my directtv just gives me a 775 error on both of my TVs. It was working just fine before he came in.

1. Does satellite really ruin coaxial cables so that they can’t be used with regular cable?

2. Where should I start troubleshooting the 775 error code?

I already checked all of the connections at the receiver box and the splitter outside.

1) No that's nonsense ... If anything it's the reverse, where cable TV coax installs can cause problems using them for satellite due to satellite's larger bandwidth requirements than cable.

2) First try looking to see if the Power Inserter (or "PI") has been unplugged somehow, and that it is still on the coax run connected to the power-passing port of the splitter.

As HoTat2 pointed out, it sounds like your power inserter is unplugged or connected to the wrong port on a splitter. The power passing port he mentioned is designated by a red line. If you have an HR54 genie, it has it's own power inserter built in and it may have been moved to a different port so if you don't have a separate power inserter make sure the HR54 is plugged into the power passing port. Good luck and let us know if it's working again. If not, I would let the cable company know about it again.

Thanks for the welcoming! I’m not sure I know exactly what I’m looking for as far as a port. It appears my set up is , dish (installed in yard on a pole), one line coming from that dish to the side of the house. It is connecting into what appears to be a splitter. It is connected on the side that has 1 “in” opening and it says power. Then there are 2 “out” lines on the other side of the splitter that are running into the home, one for bedroom and one for living room. And there is a green ground on the splitter as well. That’s all of the wiring I see and it is all tight and secure. Inside, there is a large box in the living room with a power cord, coaxial cord plugged into wall, and hdmi cord. Those are all secure as well. In the bedroom is a much smaller box with the same 3 cords that are also all connected . Am I missing something ?

Ok, the "large box" in the LR sounds like the Power Inserter (PI) ...

Make sure the green power indicator on it is lit-up ...

And then make sure the coax cable connected to the PI leading outside to the splitter is connected to the power-passing port on the outlet side of the splitter.

Look carefully at the diagram on the splitter to identify that port. It has a red-colored insert when you remove the coax connected to it.

Omg thank you so much!! I disconnected the two coaxial cables on the outlet side of the splitter and noticed one was red and one was yellow...I swapped them and voila ! So the cable guy really did screw it up lol thanks for the help , now I can enjoy my nascar this weekend :)
 
Glad it’s working.

Good luck getting the cable guy back out to fix it. Every time I ran into this situation they claim they don’t know how to fix it.

Yet if I screw up a Comcast line, everyone expects me to fix it.

I did have a situation about 20 years age where Comcast went to disconnect a lady who had recently switched to Dish and the installer sabotaged her installation.

Of course I had to fix it for “Free” but after talking to this retired little old lady she insisted she was going to get Comcast to pay me for my time to fix it.

Wrote her out a bill for $300, and said she could keep half if she managed to get them to pay.

So she must have started a big problem with the public utility commission, city counsel, Comcast and the contractor who sabotaged her installation.

A week later this lady comes into my office and handed me $150.

Being retired and on a fixed income the $150 was a big incentive for her to get me paid, so she could get her cut.

Sounds like he disconnected the lines and didnt pay anynattention to where they were and connected them backwards.

Precisely ...

Where connection order may indeed be irrelevant in a CATV installation with only RF signals on the coaxes. But not necessarily so for a satellite one where DC power or signals may be running through a coax as well ...
