THE GOLD RING? OR THE C/KU FEED?

The C/KU is of interest to me but I’m not understanding what the “gold ring” part is about. That seemed to generate interest, is it some cool gadget that boosts the signal or something?
I’m ignorant of it’s origin/use/value.. I don’t really know anything about the old school stuff like this.

Goldren Ring - for F'D ratios under .35 I think. Like down to .25 or so. Really deep dishes. All from memory (hey, there's a bit of CRS) so the numbers may not be 'right on'.

Oh....... I see. So these are oddballs? As in they don’t work on a normal dish?

A Gold Ring is just an extension for the feed throat so it sticks out thru the scalar further thereby illuminating more of the low F/D ratio (Deep Dish) dishes. It doesn't boost signal as much as it helps reject background noise. Chaparral discontinued them and deemed them unnecessary.
The C/Ku Feed is for all kinds of dishes not just deep ones. That said, I noticed the F/D ratio scale on that unit goes way deeper than the others I've seen.
