Ok Looking through that list , here's my favorites.
By the way we never subbed.

(1) WOLD Communications - Thundercats , Inspector Gadget , Brady Bunch , Friday The 13th (TV series) if it was syndicated this was a fun way to watch it , sometimes in blocks of five commercial free, sometimes just blacked out during commercial w/ the occasional time code for inserts.

(2) CBC - I think it was THUNDER BAY and Degrassi J.H. that I watched.
(3) Much Music - never heard of half of the artists singing, but MTV was encrypted and this was pretty good , ever hear of LUBA.
(4) American Exxtasy (never knew I had so many friends) 1st feature was ITC , the kids in H.S. always wanted to come over, funny thing is we didn't have mute back then so someone had to lower the volume.
(5) Playboy Channel 24 , I don't remember when it was encrypted, I remember it was soft core back then.
(6) ABC - I loved the feeds.
(7) I can't find it on the list , but I thought we had The Country Channel, Country Music and on Saturday or Sunday morning? The Phantom of the Opry. Maybe it was cable tv we had this on.
(8) Caribbean Super Station ? kind of like white springs , Public Domain stuff and plenty about Aruba.

Great list. I left my dish pointed at the Anik sats most of the time, but as I worked second shift for years , early afternoons were spent searching for wild feeds. If I am remembering correctly,there was a 1-2 day lead time when network programs were broadcast for affiliate taping so if you were willing to take the time to look every day most of what was on the evening schedules could be seen without secondary channels or time shifting . As a result I missed very little in those days and it didn't cost a thing to do this. Those were the days.....

Sunday mornings before the Sunday Ticket were spent finding the football feeds using a hand crank to move to satellite and the antenna rotator on the dish to change polaritys...

WOW!!!! Talk about a flashback... My faves were Cable Video Store CVS because they were always in fixed key mode for some reason so it was cool seeing all those movies before they were on SelecTV which by the time 88 rolled around was quickly going downhill... The Zap movies were something I never knew about, but at that time did not have a long enough arm on the dish to hit those satellites... That was also back in the day when SHOWTIME and TMC showed very good movies also... Man I miss those days. CC

I clearly remember those CBC channels! They had the little logo of that silvery globe in the corner; logo-ing wasn't that common at the time. This logo was my reference point when we had the old Houston Tracker positioner with the three number green led readout.

Also I remember watching inspector gadget religiously if only i knew then what i know now.........

Those were the good old days weren't they? Lolita was her name I believe. I have approx 36 hours of Boresight that I very recently converted from VHS to DVD and I sent them to Bob Cooper, another name that may sound familiar. Bob is going to be at the Satellite and Broadband Expo in Atlanta in April. - The advertisement for the SBE appears at the top of satellite guys quite often.

I remember Shawn Kenny in his Yellow Rain show saying "If you use this product within the USA, you're breaking the Lawr" (He pronounced it Lawr instead of Law).

I had the BUD in back of the house when I moved in, back in 1988. I think I remember getting Disney for about a month before it went to encryption. But there was always a lot of interesting stuff up there, the trouble was finding it.

The WAF wasn't there (I'm a techie, she's not), so when cable moved into the neighborhood later that year, she demanded that we get it. Stayed with Cox until Christmas of 2003, when we got the first HD set. Since Cox didn't carry the digital ABC channel (Sinclair dispute), and the set didn't have an ATSC tuner built in, that's when we got E* for OTA and HDNET.

Scott, I know that we're getting off-topic here a bit, but here it goes anyways. I live up in South-Western Ontario Canada. Atlanta is probably a 14 to 16 hour drive for me. Having never been to one of these Satellite Expo's before, do you think that an end user hobbiest would get enough out of the Expo to spend the money on gas, hotels, etc or is it more geared towards the dealers who can write it all off as a business expense? I would mostly be going to see the Fortec guys and what they're offering for free-to-air equipment, and to meet Bob Cooper, and Arthur C. Clarke. Some of the free training courses sound interesting too, but they would just be for my own entertainment/education.

Bob Cooper is also going to be at a Hamfest in Dayton Ohio in May, that is only about a 5 hour drive for me. I have been at tradeshows for my work and I also have participated in quite a few conferences where I have put on training sessions myself in regards to technology and the lumber retail industry.

Just wondering if you thought as an end user if I'd get enough out of the show to spend the money out of pocket, or if I'm able to get a lot of the same info here at SatelliteGuys? If it was within 6 hours drive there would be no doubt that I'd go. With the longer distance, it will involve a fair amount of dollars for fuel, food and accomodations.

To see the 1980's pioneers might be worth it though..

Not really, except for the Pioneers Dinner, its about time we paid tribute to the great who made this industry (and HOBBY) was it it is today.

There is no direct sales on the Expo floor, its not a flea market. But you do meet a lot of great folks there.

With that said I ALWAYS have a great time at the Expo's.

I will let you decide if its worth it or not though, because getting a room full of pioneers like this may never happen again and that my friend is priceless.
