Well, with all my G10 FTA talk, my father in-law has fired up his old C-Band system. He has gone out and figured out where in the sky G10 should be, and is going to try to set it up for G10. Now here is my question. He has what was in the late 80's a top of the line C-Band setup. He also has a ku lnb. Other than that at this point I have no clue what all he has. I assume he will need a ku mpeg 2 receiver, but other than that if he has an old ku lnb is that all he will need? Can he use a receiver like the Fortec to hook into his BUD? I will try to go find out what all he has this weekend. I do not know when the last time he fired up the motor on that dish, but it has been a long time :)

yes it SHOULD work. But there may be an issue.

The older LNB's needed a polorotor (3 wires) to change polarity. The newer LNBF's did not (if there is 3 wires on the LNB then its a polorotor). But since most KU programming is on V if he can force it to vertical that would be fine.

Yes any DVB receiver will work (Fortec, Pansat, etc)

addition to above

Most new LNB's have 2 "pins" 90 degrees apart for polarity. When you change polarity, the other pin gets the signal. The older style only had one "pin" and the polorotor turned it quickly depending on polarity (thats why alot of people had a "skip" setup on their C-band so it went 1,3,5,7,9 all the way to 23, then 2,4,6 etc so not to burn out the polorotor

Thanks! Is there anyhting about satellite that you do not know? You are THE resource :) It might be easier and more cost effective for him to just get a FTA system. I will scope out his setup and see what he has.

If he is going to park it on G10, there are some FTA receivers out there, that can control a polarotor (servo motor). The Manhattan's can and some of the Pansat's (if not all) can. There may be others as well. Some of the Manhattan's will even work an actuator.
If his dish had an actuator and it still works, he can use his old analog receiver to control polarity and the actuator movement. If the actuator doesn't work or it was a fixed dish, he can still use the analog receiver to control the polarotor.

I think the pansat 1500 can control a polarotor (if you dont let the smoke out ;-) ) , and I know the 2500 and 2700a can. Really his best bet is to slave his dvb unit to his analog unit. Or he can go all out and get a Manhattan reciever, some models of which ( i believe) can control everything on his BUD.

The 1500 doesn't....I have one and there is no polorotor

The 2100 I have I fried that :D

The 3500 does too but if he is going to be parked on G10, he may not need the analog receiver. Just get V fine tuned and then he'd be set

OK, I will give him this info. I think his BUD still works :)
That would be great, because then he would be one up on you. He would be able to watch C-band FTA, while you can't. And then you could spend more time with the in-laws, when you wanted to watch something you can't get, but he can.

If his bud still works properly, that is great news..another FTA'er :)

He got Dish Network about 8 years ago and would fire up the BUD every so often for network feeds. I always wanted him to get rid of it so i could have it :) But, he lives out in the country on an acreage so he has all the room :)

I did give him some supplie so that he could hook his Dish Network up at their boat on the Mississippi they bought last year. It is a 30 foot cabin cruiser type thingy. We also got him set up in his 34' motor home with Dish. It works pretty slick, I had acquired several 18" dishes over the years, and we made some portable mounts up so all he has to do is unhook his receiver and take it into whatever vehicle he has. He actually has a 301 receiver that he keeps active but only uses it when they travel.

oops thought you let the smoke out of the 1500, not the 2100. Must be loosing memory cells lol

with mesh, make sure the holes are small enough. If you can fit a pencil through them, then KU will have issues. But it sounds like he already has a KU LNB so he should be good to go

I know he has Ku. Will check the dish out. He might just want to buy an FTA system. The price is sure right :)

And now that I know how to fnd a bird, it should not take me days to set it up :)
