Hello, I currently have Time Warner Cable and am thinking about switching to DirecTV. The only thing that turns me away from DTV is the monthly fee for each receiver. I will be needing 4 cable boxes for each room. And was wondering if there's a way I can set up new service, and just buy my own receivers so I don't have to worry about paying the $20.00 extra a month for each receive. Will DTV allow this, or will I have to lease receivers from them? I know my current cable company doesn't allow us to purchase our own receivers, hopefully DirecTV does, and if they do, what's a good trusted website to buy DirecTV receivers?

No... if you "own" them, you will need to still pay the $4.99 mirroring fee for each extra receiver.

So it would be ~$20 total (not per receiver) per month.

This is basically the same if you lease or purchase the equipment.
(the difference is they call it a lease fee, instead of a mirror fee)

And they don't have anything like Dish Network where you can use 1 receiver on 2 tvs?

Ehh see that's kinda keeping me away from DTV. With cable, I don't need a box in every room, so I don't need to pay the $5.00 extra for every single box. Maybe Dish Network has a better deal.

Just remember that 2nd out is RF (coax) crappiest picture you can have. Separate receivers are worth the mirror. Even though I have always agreed the 3rd and up should be free of fees.

With DISH Notwerk if you don't have a telephone plugged into the dual tuner you will be charged $5 for the additional tuner. If you are so turned off just stay with Time Warner we won't mind.

There's a reason I am trying to find a better solution. Time Warner sucks. They don't carry NFL Network, and I just don't think it's cool they charge you for each receiver even if you buy your own. I'm just trying to find the best solution. You don't have to be a jerk about it. And why do you need a telephone line plugged in to the receiver to not be charged $5.00?

There is no 1 perfect solution, that's why there are choices to be made based on your own personal needs. Sounds like TW is no longer an option for you; do youhave a telco based provider serving your area? If no, then go down each DBS company's channels list and choose that way. If cost is your primary concern choose that way, but unfortunately none of them are perfect. Overall, I like DirecTV better.

I wish Fios was available in my area, I would jump ship in a heartbeat. The reason DirecTV is the main one I'm look at is because a Verizon DSL rep told me that since I have service with both landline and DSL, I can get a $16.00 discount a month for the first 12 months, then a $6.00 discount after.

I REALLY assumed he meant 4 TOTAL receivers as well; and also another poster pointed out it was $4.99 for each (#2 and up) not the $20 for each receiver.

The reason I went with DirecTV is because in our location, Dish just not too long ago(maybe a year) dish added locals in our area and we need to see 3 orbital locations with dish which couldn't happen until our neighbor cut down his tree. DirecTV is also higher in the sky. I also like DirecTVs equipment better. At the time I only needed 101. Luckely before going HD, my nighbor got rid of his tree.

I need 1 box for each room, I'm sorry if I worded it wrong, but you know what I mean.

There I fixed it! haha I'm so stupid.

4 boxes for EACH room ? REALLY?

Example

Den: 4
Master: 4
Bedroom1: 4
Bedroom2: 4

That's a total of 16 receivers for 4 room. Are you sure? or 12 for 3 rooms. OUCH!

Or do you need 1 receiver for each of 4 rooms ? Total of 4 receivers.

Den: 1
Master: 1
Bedroom1: 1
Bedroom2: 1

OK no we got it.

Den: 1 (included with sub)
Master: 1 ($4.99)
Bedroom1: 1 ($4.99)
Bedroom2: 1 ($4.99)

Example sub $49.99
Mirror fees $14.97
sub total $64.96/mo

I would go through the DirecTV website "System config" tool. It will show you step by step the costs. You can also get all the current hardware and free 4 room install and the current subscription promo package.

Ok, with no deals counting, except the $16.00 off. I would probably get the $50.00 one that gives you 180+ channels. Plus I would need 3 more receivers. Which would be $49.00 after everything. Around how much are taxes with DirecTV?

That's why I asking for a estimate. I live in New York state, in the Albany area. I don't want a specific tax amount, but how much do the rest of you pay for taxes? Just want a good example. They really seem to get you with taxes all the time :-D
