ESPN.com is reporting that dale jr.'s longtime sponsor, budweiser, will not follow him to hendrick motor sports where the younger earnhardt begins competing next season.

ESPN.com is further reporting that Pepsico will likely be the primary sponsor instead, with the possibility of mountain dew colors decorating junior's new ride.

meanwhile, budweiser may become the primary sponsor of kasey kahne's number 9 ride at evernham motor sports.

stay tuned!!

This info I heard earlier, I certianly hope that Pepsi and Mountian Dew do not get the sponsorship, but I guess they will take whatever they can.
I am dissapointed that Bud dropped out .

Going from Budweiser "The King of Beers" to Pepsi............ yippi .. :down!sadroll!protest:no

Sadly, I have no say in it.

no explaination yet why bud is dropping junior for kasey kahne.

i expect junior merchandise to skyrocket, if it hasn't already!

i would be perfectly happy with sony as his new sponsor but mountain dew isn't junior and vice versa. but as you said, jimbo, it isn't in our hands!

If Budweiser wasn't following him, I would have hopped for Wrangler to be the primary sponsor. He could have gone with the yellow/blue scheme that got big "E" his first cup.

"We have agreements in place with sponsors for the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup season, which prevent us from having a relationship with Budweiser," team owner Rick Hendrick " link. I remember that Bud/JR commercial. How many people have 8 tattoos that are pissed right now.

I had earlier heard a rumor of VISA being his major sponsor, then didn't hear anythign after that.

The Pepsi thing is a Hendricks thing I believe.
Your right, Pepsi doesn't fit Jr.

Maybe Jr. and Sony XBR !

Ya that was when he announced he was changing to 6.7 I think !, That was different.
Could he be going to 5.8 ???

I think this also means that the #8 will not be moving to Hendricks either, seeing I would have thought that Bud would have waited out to see if the # 8 went with him.
Just thinking outloud, nothing has been said about this.

i read this morning that dei still seems amenable to the idea of switching car numbers with hendrick. we'll have to wait and see about that.

I still am holding out hope that they will give the # 8 to Jr., technically it was given to him by Dale Sr., although NASCAR owns the numbers.

I kinda thought that Bud would go with him if the # 8 also did. I guess it came down to Hendricks already having Sponsors lined up for '08.
Maybe Bud and Dale will get back together later down the line...

i think the last i read, nascar was pooh poohing the idea because they own the car numbers and not the teams. and they basically said......don't even think about it! they also wouldn't let childress retire the number 3 after dale sr. died.

you know, sometimes, i wish there was a sanctioning body that could over rule nascar. they have gotten way too big and powerful for their own good!!!

Now I have heard the exact opposite ....
I heard that NASCAR made the point that they owned the numbers and were leased to teams yearly, that meaning that if Hendricks wanted it, it COULD be given to them , no questions asked ... then, it was mentioned that DEI would want money or something in exchange and NASCAR said, "We don't want money exchanged", or don't want to know about it, if it is exchanged.

As for retiring numbers, I think their stance on it is rediculas,
Has RCR actually inquired about retiring the # 3 ?

Is NASCAR afraid they would run out of numbers or what ?

Jimbo

actually, jimbo, i stand corrected about nascar's stance on numbers....you are correct.

to answer your other question, i have a vague recollection that childress spoke to nascar about retiring the 3. but i'm not going to swear to it. i think the 3 should be retired as well as the 43, 7 (in honor of alan kulwicki) and the 28 (in honor of davey allison) for starters. but i think i have shared my opinions of nascar.

The owners own some of the car numbers and they decide if a number is to be run or retired, like the #8 is owned by DEI(Teresa) and Richard Childress ownes the #3! As far as the jr thing, the hole thing just makes me sick! Gordon and Johnson sleeping partners and now do the Dew, give me a break! Big E. will be turning in his crave! Plus DEI has really been running good and now have the Richard Childress and DEI combo engines! If I were jr I'd be saying I f***** up!

You are wrong. Nascar owns all of the numbers and they LEASE them to the teams each year. If a team has a number they continue to get the right to lease that number the next year as long as they are using it. However, Nascar has made an exception by allowing Richard to keep the number even though he is not using it at this time. Let's face it, no one would be able to use the 3 anyway, there would be major backlash from the fans.

You are correct Lakebum. NASCAR owns all numbers and leases them. Childress still leases the #3 so nobody else can use it.

unless, junior drives it someday!

Yep you're right, that is only way I see it being used in the near term at all. Otherwise it would need to be 20-30 years before it becomes a real option again.

i disagree to an extent. i think so long as richard childress is in nascar, that 3 won't go anywhere....again, unless junior drives it someday.

what happens when richard retires is another story. unless, he keeps his race team in the family or makes some sort of stipulation to whomever, eventually buys his team.

so in that regard, yeah, maybe in 20 years or so, it comes out of unofficial retirement!
