Broadcast TV's Found Money: How It'll Get to $7.6 Billion in Revenue by 2019

Charlie, 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000% correct.

Yes I agree with him completely, furthermore, prices continue to rise and quality continues to decline.Cable networks are putting the networks to shame with quality shows.

Actually, hasn't it been reported that cable/sat now has more eyes more often?

Yup. That's why more people watch the cable networks instead of broadcast nets. Oh, wait. ;)

Oh wait....That's why TWD is getting record ratings, shows like Breaking Bad get decent ratings plus all the great reviews, miniseries like the Hatfields and McCoy's got record ratings, and the upcoming Mob City and Bonnie and Clyde probably will as well. It's pretty easy to see that cable has some of the best shows on tv these days.AMC,FX,and TNT are putting out much better quality than the networks,at least imo.

Traditional broadcasters are running scared. They are trying to keep alive a dying business model, rather than adapt. And they so far have the bucks to delay the inevitable thru court actions. Which, BTW, don't seem to be working out very well for them. They can't FORCE people to watch their products. Many, many alternatives, which they seem to overlook, for people's time. Heck, if commercials go too far, I see a resurgence for libraries, books, story time, etc. Oh WAIT! They're already doing JUST FINE!

Possible. I haven't seen it. I just looked, and the closest thing I can find is "TV by the numbers" and taking two articles and comparing the ratings between broadcast & cable. If I'm doing my math right (the website shows viewers for cable nets and ratings for broadcast net), last week's lineup shows:
NBC
CBS
ESPN
ABC
Disney
Hallmark
USA
Fox

I didn't say there weren't good shows on cable, just that more people watch broadcast nets than cable nets.

Let me clarify my viewpoints...
1) I don't think broadcasters should fight Aereo.
2) I do think it's possible broadcasters can be asking for too much in retrans fees (but they are entitled to some)
3) I don't think broadcasters should be fighting auto-hop.

I am curious since you (among others I believe) have said broadcasters need to "adapt their model"... what do you suggest?

I would like to see broadcasters stream their own programming/allow for post-show VOD. However, that capability is not totally in their control. Yes, from a technical standpoint it can be done (even limiting the streams to viewers in their market), but contracts with programming & commercial providers limit it.

Charlie should start buying as many locals stations as he can. He could rule the competition while not having to pay outrageous carriage fees.

It may be that the traditional broadcasters hit the top of the ratings (NBC #1? Really?) but there are so many more "cable" channels they may add up to more eyes on "cable" than traditional broadcasters.

It is not my responsibility to suggest how they can make money in the future. That is their own responsibility. They may simply be outdated and should be allowed to wither if they don't morph. They are not guaranteed an iron rice bowl. Should we have kept wheelwrights and buggy whip makers in business at the expense of automobiles? We still have a few, a very few, but times change.

Yep TWD is killing it in the ratings. It is the #1 show in the important 18-49 which is what advertisers look at.

My wife and I watch way more cable shows then broadcast. Maybe that's just us.

Never said it was your responsibility. But I figured, since you know the "model is outdated", you must know what the next step is.

One thing cable nets won't be able to do that affiliates can is local programming. Whether that be news (BIG eyeballs I'm willing to wager if you look at viewers across the county), sporting events, parades, or other special programming, local broadcasters, IMO, will be around a while. Now, what they fill other time (take away network feeds) with might change.

ETA: Yes, I know not every affiliate does local programming. But those that do will have something to "hang their hat on" if networks decide to feed straight to the cable/satcos.
