This just flashed on my Market news release a few minutes ago. Apple plans to release IPAD3 this September according to the Economic Times of Taiwan. Reliable source? You decide! Anyway, they claim the big new addition to Ipad3 will be a new hidef screen with 6 times the resolution AND it will support 3D movies and apps.

FWIW- I saw a screen on display at Sony Booth at NAB and if this Apple screen is the same one it will be a big big leap in image quality. The blacks are visually perfect as well as super bright color for high ambient light viewing. 3D glasses free is basically perfect too but still single viewer as is all glasses free 3D. Back in April the buzz was the screen is too expensive to be a consumer product and would be available only on Sony Broadcast Monitors. I'm hoping this is it.

It has been a rumor that the improved res screen was coming this year but delayed due to production problems. Maybe they got the production up and running...

I don't know, I have been following the rumor mill too, and while I've been wrong before, I'd be really surprised if turns out to be true.

I think its way premature to come out with a brand new device 6 months after the second one. But we'll see. And Economic Times of Taiwan??

Quite honestly it wouldn't surprise me if this one ended up being true. Even before the iPad 2 came out, there were rumors that the 3 would be out in time for the holidays.

Unlike cell phones, there's no 2 year lock in with a carrier in exchange for subsidized pricing for tablets. This seems to indicate to me the need to release hardware revisions more frequently to keep up with other tablet hardware developments.

Given that this one is not confirmed by many of the reliable stand-bys, I put a (RUMOR) tag into the thread title. I can remove it if it gets confirmed by multiple sources, but I don't want Satelliteguys to be pushing "Breaking News" about something that is far from a certainty. :)

You gotta be kidding me... This is worse than the iPhone 1 price reduction fiasco if that is true..

How so? Everyone points out that Apple's annual product refresh cycle puts them at a disadvantage as relates to Android makers. A six month product refresh cycle would seem to ease this disadvantage.

People can't complain that their iPad 2 is no longer top of the heap after six months, that's always been the nature of the beast with technology. After all, it can be even more extreme with desktops and laptops.

Isn't it the other way around?
Everyone points out that you can't buy an Android device since it is obsolete the next day...:)

BTW, Microsoft is moving to annual updates of their mobile OS and so is Google after Ice Cream.
But hardware, of course, will be on different schedule...

Diogen.

I'd be surprised. With the iPhone 4GS supposedly being announced in September. Jobs likes to space these things out a bit.

I think we will see quite a few changes at Apple, especially in their retail market strategy, given the loss of Ron Johnson. The ipad3 coming out in September makes sense. They predict a current second quarter sales of 9 million ipad2s. Getting a new version in time for the Holiday sales is what made me think it is a logical move. Buying ipads and ipods for gift items is more likely than buying a new phone, less attached to holiday sales.

I haven't had time to look this up yet but I understand a second source for this "rumor" is PC Magazine that referenced the movie studios wanting to be ready with content for the Apple 3D ipad. Mike- When information comes from a source whose track record has been accurate in the past, I think it is more than a rumor, unless that source themselves call it a rumor. To me, a rumor is buzz floating around the internet that can't be traced to a source. Maybe someone can research this out at PCMagazine.com. I have to get back on editing a 3D video this afternoon.

One thing I've learned in the internet era of news is that very frequently you'll see a rumor that is seemingly everywhere . Then when you check it's one item being referenced by many places.

Just because the iPad 3 comes out does not mean that the iPad 2 is over.

In fact it might still be an "iPad 2" with just a different feature set.

Apple did this a long time with the iPod lines. They had a 6 month cycle, but not all the iPods were updated every 6 months.

Perhaps it will be the "iPad 2XHD" for extreme high definition. They will not really want to imply that the iPad 2 is not HD, just that this one is extra HD. I am sure it will cost more, perhaps have a different faster graphics chip set like Nvidia's Tegra "Kal-El".

Maybe next is the iPad 2 nano with a small screen (like 7")...

It will be interesting to see what Apple does to hold on to market share. Having a couple more entries to cover different ends of the spectrum (high end and low end), could be a way to really maintain control.

There is finally a rumor on Macrumors.com, which uses Bloomberg as its source.

Bloomberg's sources also report that Apple is testing a version of the iPad that has a "higher resolution screen, similar to the one now used in the iPhone 4". From here, Bloomberg references older rumors that Apple might be working on a cheaper iPhone aimed at attracting customers in developing countries. They seem to believe that work is continuing on this low-end iPhone.

Finally, they report that the resolution of the new iPad would be "about one-third higher" than the iPad 2. Such a small increase would be a surprise as Apple's method for increasing resolution on the iPhone was to double each dimension to offer simple scaling for apps. It's been expected that Apple might adopt the same technique in the iPad 3, though technical hurdles may exist for such high resolution displays.

They were leery of the 1/3 resolution increase for the app scaling; and only said they are "testing a version of the iPad" - not the same language as the CONFIRMATION they had about the iPhone 5 for September.

I didn't see anything at PCMagazine.com about the iPad 3.

Probably because you didn't bother to look except maybe on the front page of the current day website. The whole article was published a while back, last month I recall. I read it and just saw the reference to it again. There, (complete rumor and speculation) was that the ipad would have the AMOLED screen in ipad3 and this would have the 3D glasses free layer as well.
But the big news is the timing of the resease being in the Fall in time for Holiday sales. I don't see any indication that ipadx will be a biannual release but the shift to Fall makes perfect sense.

Mike- I agree that ipad3 will not make ipad 2 or 1 for that matter, not work. However, I do believe the manufacturer of ipad2's will be over and like all Apple products, it will be replaced with the ipad3 in the stores. Eventually as time passes the original ipad 1 may no longer be robust enough to support new iOS updates. At that time we original owners will be stuck in the past. But as long as we have wifi and a good collection of apps, we can still have fun with our original ipad1's.

FWIW- AMOLED screen with 3D is not enough to make me upgrade to ipad3. I got an ipad that does almost everything I want and all that I need. I am a happy ipad1 owner! Consider that I am also a huge 3D enthusiast but I don't need the 3D ipad, yet...

"yet" :D I like you, am very happy and content with my iPad1, however what has been rumored for #3 is very interesting and enticing. I have "yet" to fall victim to the lure of 3D TV, "yet"......:D;)

Yes. I went beyond the front page. No. I didn't dig to deep beyond that because if it was confirmed to be true, one shouldn't have to look all through back articles for big news such as that. I wasn't implying that the information wasn't there, somewhere.

Don, Heck, Apple doesn't officially call it ipad 2 in its advertising, its just the "ipad" And yeah, I think probably in a two years or so, the lack of a dual core processor on the iPad 1 will relegate it to "won't run current software" but Apple will support it in the way the original generation ipod touches are; iTunes just says "sorry this app is not compatible with your device."
