Normally, I would put this in the NFL section, but this is getting some consideration because of some the rule changes and because, well, let's be frank here....Belichick is saying it. LOL!

I hate this bastard so much that I respect him more and more every time he speaks!:p:eek:

Bill Belichick wants the extra point to die

By MJD

This is my favorite thing to come out of the conversation about the new kickoff rules. Bill Belichick used a kickoff question to move the conversation toward the extra point, and argued that it should be eliminated from the game, or at least greatly modified.

"Philosophically, plays that are non-plays shouldn't be in the game. I don't think it is good for the game. Extra points, when the odds are 99 percent range in extra points it is not a play. Let's move the ball back to the 15-20 yard line and not make it a tap in. Let them kick it. Same thing with the kickoff return, if you're just going to put the ball on the 20, put the ball on the 20."

(Applause.)

Given my druthers, I'd eliminate it completely -- I don't think you'd see a lot of kicks missed from the 15 or 20, either. It saves time, it speeds the game along, and the guy in the end-zone seats with the John 3:16 sign doesn't get time to prepare for his close-up.

This is the MJD plan: Let's just make touchdowns worth seven, and if someone wants to risk a point either way, they'll have the option to trot the ball out to the 2-point conversion spot, and they'll get eight points for their touchdown if they convert, six if they don't. Hell, I say we move that back, too. I think the 6-yard-line sounds about right.

I'm with him on the kickoff, too. I'll talk more about this later, but Belichick is right. If what the NFL wants is more touchbacks, then why go halfway? Put the ball on the 20. Put it on the 25 or 30 if you want to. I'm not saying I'm anti-kickoff, I'm just saying that if the league just wants drives to start at the 20, there are ways to do that that are more efficient.

Hmm. This Belichick character. I think he might be a smart one.

Belichick makes two good points. I agree with him.

In terms of the new kickoff rules, I say if the kicker kicks into the end zone and the receiving team gets a touchback, they should get it at the 30. That way, there would be a little more strategy on the kicking team. Ie. whether to bloop it without it going to the endzone and banking on their team tackling before the player reaches the 30.

The new rules favor the kicking team soooo much, it's taken a dynamic part of the game away.

i say we revert rules back to 1950 or so
no more coddling these millionaires
let em hit, gouge, headslap, ect

You are missing the point of why do this... oh never mind.
Because the extra point has been around forever, it is part of the game as was the kickoff return ... injuries is a part any thing you do, you take the risk and gamble on not getting hurt. Sure they can get rid of the flagrant injury stuff like head to head etc.

Won't make any sense doing it that way. It's like having a nice house. You wanna keep it nice and well maintained for as long as you can. Say thing applies to ANY ASSET. You guys gotta get that whole "coddling these millionaires" mentality out of it.

IF being an NFL football player or any kind of professional athlete was THAT easy, everyone would do it and it would be paying about $19 an hour.

remember at one time people played because they loved the game, and often had other jobs.
it wasnt always as it is today

So I guess you would know what is best for the game more than one of the best coaches to ever coach the NFL? Ok, gotcha! Not gonna argue with your opinion.

BUT, they also knew they would get paid for it. Only people that TRULY play for the love of the game is kids and amateurs. Also, back then there were no BILLION dollars TV deals with networks, satellite companies and radio stations.

Taking away the kickoff would eliminate a huge part of the game, for the kicking team to try on onside kick, or regain possession from a turnover during the runback. You lose that aspect of the game if you simply award possession of the ball...

My thinking is, what Belichick is saying is that IF you are gonna have 99% of the kicks end up being touchbacks AND if you are worried about that injury during kick offs, why not give the team the option of saying, "here, take it on the 20 yard line.....".

Maybe I am wrong...but that what it sounds like he is telling the league.

Ok... change it like you want, but do not call it football (no kicking eliminates the foot) and I would beg to differ on him being one of the best coaches ever (camera gate anyone?)

Really? Beg to differ on being one of the best coaches? Look, personal feelings aside...and as a Raider fan, we have come to hate the Patsy pretty good....he IS one one the best coaches the league has ever had because he has 3 rings to prove it. Only Chuck Noll has more rings and not even the great Vince Lombardi has as many.

EVERYONE copies the Pats on how a organization SHOULD BE run and alot of that has to do with Kraft AND Belichick. Whether you like him or not, he IS one of the best coaches ever.

And I posted this because it is getting some ear regarding changing rules. I like the idea of moving the extra point back and IF the whole idea is to eliminate injuries and make 99% of the kickoffs touchbacks, WHY even have a kick off?

First, you're not going to have 99% be touchbacks, and, automatically awarding the other team the ball drastically changes the comback strategy for a team that's losing. I can't see how you take that from the game.

Lets just call it the National Touchball League and the real football players can go to the CFL.

I would like to see them do away with the automatic review of scoring plays unless they can get it go more seamless. It has been a stoppage in the game holding up the extra point in most of the games I have watched so far in the preseason.

From watching the preseason this week, it seems some kickers were letting up to encourage a return attempt, either that or they will be the kickers that are cut soon, but if the majority of the kickoffs become touchbacks, just do away with it and give them the ball on the 20. Sure you lose the strategy element of the possible on side kick, but it is really a waste of time right now. They go to commercial after score, come back for kickoff for touchback, go to commercial again, then come back to start possession. We could possibly do away with a half hour of commercials. You know the NFL would love that!

No commercials would be eliminated, the networks pay a lot to get the contracts and have to make their money. Those ads would just get inserted somewhere else...
