My husband and I may be moving to an area of our county not serviced by cable, so we are beginning to look at and compare Direct TV vs Dish Network. We are leaning toward Direct TV at the moment, primarily due to the Sports offerings (we're both MLB fans and Dish is sorely lacking in that area). Also, my husband is a huge Ohio State Buckeye Football fan. We live in southern Kentucky and currently we get the Big 10 network and 2 alternate Big 10 network channels via our cable system. I know the Big 10 network is on both Dish and Direct TV. My questions though, are is it offered only in certain states or nationwide? Is it HD or SD or both? Also, is it just the 'main' Big 10 feed or are the alternate channels that show additional college football games on Saturdays offered as well? My hubby would be majorly peeved if he couldn't watch the Buckeyes.

With Directv's basic package (Choice) you get the Big10 Network and 4 or 5 alt channels for the football/basketball overflow games regardless of location.

Dish you have to be in one of the states for Big10 or pay $7 a month to add it. Kentucky is not a Big10 state so with Dish you'd have to pay extra

Directv has all the games in HD...610 is the "main" channel

Here is this weeks schedule
Catch your Big Ten games on DIRECTV! See below for details in your area.

Saturday: 12:00 PM (ET) / 11:00 AM (CT)
AUSTIN PEAY VS. WISCONSIN: channel 610 or 610 (HD)
BALL STATE VS. IOWA: channel 609 or 609-1 (HD)
NORTHERN COLORADO VS. MICHIGAN STATE: channel 611 or 611-1 (HD)
CENTRAL MICHIGAN VS. NORTHWESTERN: channel 612 or 612-1 (HD)
TOLEDO VS. PURDUE: channel 615 or 615-1 (HD)

Saturday: 3:30 PM (ET) / 2:30 PM (CT)
TEMPLE VS. PENN STATE: channel 610 or 610 (HD)

Saturday: 7:00 PM (ET) / 6:00 PM (CT)
AKRON VS. INDIANA: channel 610 or 610 (HD)

Saturday: 8:30 PM (ET) / 7:30 PM (CT)
NORTHERN ILLINOIS VS. MINNESOTA: channel 609 or 609-1 (HD)

Fwiw, this week is NOT a big week for Big Ten Network games.

Usually the Big Boys play 2-3 games a year on the Big 10 Network. (football wise)
Bucks have been on twice so far this year and thats probably it.

Fortunatly, the Bucks are normally on one of the ESPN's or ABC.
Of course that would change depending on where your moving to.

Where are you thinking of moving to ?

Like Ice said, you'll get all the Big Ten channels with D*.

Thanks

Thanks for the detailed info. It's looking like Direct TV is taking the clear lead in our comparsion. Too bad locals aren't part of the deal in our area. Guess we'll be checking out OTA options.

Are you sure that D* doesn't have your locals, they go by your Zip Code ?
What would your zip code be ?

actually it is ;)
8 teams out of 11 are on Big10 this week...but its all non-conference ;)

by the way, Ohio State is on Big10 next week against Illinois :)

I actually am very surprised that the Bucks are NOT on BTN this week.

I guess what I meant to say was that as the year goes on, the Bucks won't be on BTN much.
The BIG games will be on the ESPN's and ABC, Iowa, Wisconsin, Penn State, and M of course won't be on BTN.

That said, I can very easily see why she wants to make sure she is able to get the channel.

I was going to check on the BTN webpage and insert the zip she's moving to and see where they said to get them and if there was a charge.

I thought if you were outside of the Big Ten states, there was a fee for the channel.

IIRC ESPN gets dibs on the 1st two Big10 games pickings...Big10 gets 3rd then they alternate...so there is usually one or two weeks in non conference where the BIg10 has a bunch of games

thats only on Dish. Directv its available to everyone with Choice or greater

We would be staying in the same county (Warren, KY) that we are currently in....just moving further out 'in the sticks' where our cable company does not offer service.

Are you close to Bowling Green , Ky ?
If so you should be able to get OTA networks with an antenna.

You are correct, D* doesn't have your area covered yet, you may be eligible for the the NY locals.

and checking a tv fool report if the OP stays in the county (I ran an address in Woodburn) they should get the missing networks with an antenna...maybe even an indoor one

advantage is there are only 4 stations that they need to pick up since some are on subchannels (ABC/FOX/CW on one, NBC/CBS on another, 2 PBS) and they're all in the same vicinity

disadvantage is they're grouped with subchannels so if you cant get one station you're out at least 2 networks

I looked at Bowling Green Kentucky seeing it looked like the largest city in the area mentioned.
IF thats where they are the OTA antenna should get them for them.

Where did they say Woodburn ?
I'm guessing you just picked on, like I did earlier.

She said same county but out "in the sticks", I chose Woodburn as that is as far as they can get yet still be in the same county. OP will probably be closer than that to Bowling Green (towers show to be in BG)

Do you remember how far away the towers were ?
