Out here where I live we have been having a lot of trouble with voltage sags lately. It probably has alot to do with the hot weather and the power grid not being able to keep up, but anyway...

I have a 508 which gets a lot of use. What would you knowledgeable folks out there suggest to protect it from a fickle and unpredictable power source?

So since Dish equipment has switching power supplies a cheap UPS would be OK? It doesn't have to last through a substantial power outage, just condition the line enough to protect my DVR.

Do not buy 'cheap', buy inexpensive ;), do not buy some unknown brand (not that they cannot be good, just that they may not have a track record).

I like APC ( http://www.apc.com/ ) myself (TrippLites ( http://www.tripplite.com/ ) too), this model would do for you and leave some headroom (this one is $108).

http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BK500&tab=models

If you feel that is too much, this one for $80 will do:
http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BK350&tab=models

If those are too big and bulky, maybe one of these:
$40 - http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BE350R&tab=models

$60 - http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BE500R&tab=models

No, I do not work for APC. :)

Voltage Drops etc

I use a apc ups 350va for my 622 , 921 and 508 dvr's
I got them at office depot for 19.99 after the rebate
they help alot with voltage drops from the ac starting or lows from switching grids.
they also provide surge protection which is very important with high end electronics and hard disk's.

Is it a bad idea to operate a UPS sitting on its side? I would like to fit one under a dresser in a bedroom but the only way it will fit is lying on its side.

It should be fine, so as long as reasonable ventilation is given, you won't harm it putting it on its side in the manner you speak of.

Hope not... That's the way mine is.

I use a Monster HTS 2600.

If voltage gets to high or to low, it just shuts everything off to protect from brownouts and surges.
