Who says the Baby Bells are slowing down on the high-speed data front?
Indeed, the third quarter is shaping up to be a big one again for the regional Bells,
after a bad slump in the spring. Earlier today BellSouth reported strong DSL gains in the
summer quarter, picking up 205,000 net data subscribers. That total is up from 134,000
new DSL subscribers in the year-ago period and 124,000 in the previous quarter.
BellSouth's healthy increase follows SBC Communications' record-breaking DSL gains in Q3.
SBC added a whopping 528,000 high-speed data customers in the third quarter, beating its
previous high of 504,000 in the first quarter. In addition, the company easily surpassed
its gains of 402,000 in the year-ago period and 360,000 in the second quarter.
Look for more of the same soon from Verizon, which rolled out a new, low-priced DSL tier
with Yahoo during the summer. Maybe those DSL price cuts are paying off after all.
