BellSouth launches door-to-door sales campaign to work directly with consumers

ATLANTA, Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Building on its initial launch of wireless broadband in Athens, Ga., BellSouth (NYSE: BLS - News) today announced that it has installed a third radio tower in the city to expand the availability of its wireless high-speed Internet service. The third tower ensures that even more consumers and businesses in Athens have access to BellSouth® Wireless Broadband.

To highlight the expanded coverage and sell the service, BellSouth is also rolling out a door-to-door sales campaign, beginning Nov. 17. Authorized agents will promote BellSouth Wireless Broadband through Dec. 10.

"Athens shares a milestone with BellSouth as the home of our first commercial launch of wireless broadband service," said Ron Frieson, president of Georgia Operations. "I am delighted that we can now offer it to even more consumers and businesses.

"With our door-to-door sales agents, we will be able to work directly with interested consumers, answer their questions and sign them up for service on the spot," Frieson said.

Since its Athens launch in August 2005, BellSouth has commercially deployed wireless broadband in Palatka, Fla., and New Orleans, where it has helped small business owners gain high-speed Internet access when traditional wireline broadband remains affected by Hurricane Katrina. Wireless broadband technology can also be used to bring high-speed Internet access to rural areas where wireline broadband cannot be efficiently deployed.

What makes BellSouth Wireless Broadband Service unique is how it uses licensed radio spectrum to deliver broadband speeds to the user through a small desktop modem. Users can elect not to sign up for a traditional telephone line from BellSouth and still enjoy high-speed Internet access from the company.

And, BellSouth offers students in Athens the ability to suspend their wireless broadband service between May and July, when many leave town for the summer. They will pay a nominal charge per month to maintain their accounts, which allows them continued access to e-mail accounts through the summer, and can re-activate service at no charge when they return to Athens. Discounts are also available for Cingular and BellSouth wireline customers.
