Not since Eddie Albert and the kids in Escape to Witch Mountain has there been so much fun in a Winnebago.
Mame McCutchin and Toby Amies, hosts of the TV show Art- land: USA, are driving from Miami to Anchorage, Alaska, in a Winnebago adorned like a drip painting by Jackson Pollock. They are looking for stellar art and architecture and idiosyncratic roadside attractions.
Ms. McCutchin and Mr. Amies are in Dallas-Fort Worth this weekend, with a production crew in tow, shooting an episode of the show for Voom's Gallery HD.
"We are using art as a way to look at America," said Ms. McCutchin. "This is our second season taping. Last season we stopped in Marfa, and it was our favorite place in the whole country. And now we're back for more."
Artland: USA is an hourlong show shot with high-definition cameras and broadcast on Gallery HD, available through Voom HD Networks on satellite. But the technology is just the means to an end. Executive producer Tamar Hacker said: "I wanted a series that explored American art so when people go on vacation they know the sights to see. Our show doesn't intimidate you. It invites you along for the ride."
Their local tour includes high and low culture, fine art as well as kitsch.
They're perusing the Kimbell Art Museum and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and bull riding at Billy Bob's Texas. In Dallas, the order is reversed. First kitsch – the video screens at Victory Plaza – then painter Sam Reveles at Dunn & Brown Contemporary.
The Texas episode is scheduled to air Oct. 18.
