Does anyone know if you can play movies stored on your computer over an apple tv unit? I can with WD TV , but would like to ad MLB to my options.

Yes you can. But the video must be in your iTunes library. That library can include not only things bought or rented from iTunes, but rips you import.

I used Handbrake to convert video to a format the AppleTV likes and it works quite well.
