Verizon Debuts Caller ID On FiOS TV In Three Markets

Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Texas Customers First To Receive Feature

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, December 10, 2009

Verizon launched its first caller ID on TV services -- after trailing major cable operators with the feature -- for FiOS TV customers in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Texas.
The feature, available to qualifying customers for no additional charge, will see incoming caller ID information displayed for several seconds in the corner of their TV screen. They can then decide if they want to pause the current program and answer the call, or continue watching TV and let the call go to voicemail.
Verizon and AT&T, the U.S.'s largest telco, have been behind the cable industry with caller ID on the TV. MSOs that widely offer the feature include Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications and Cablevision Systems.
Verizon plans to introduce the service in other FiOS markets over the next few weeks, spokesman Cliff Lee said, but he didn't provide details on where and when the feature will appear next.
The service requires customers to have FiOS TV and a FiOS voice service and subscribe to regular caller ID service, according to Lee. And, in some cases, subscribers might also have to take FiOS Internet as well.
If customers have both FiOS TV and FiOS Digital Voice -- the telco's voice-over-IP service -- they don't need to also be a FiOS Internet subscriber. Those customers will only need to check the "Settings" category on the interactive media guide's main menu on the TV and then click on "Caller ID" to determine if the service is available to them.
"FiOS Digital Voice is only available on a limited basis at this time in most FiOS markets," including those in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Texas, Lee said.
If customers do not subscribe to FiOS Digital Voice or if it's not currently available in their area, Verizon is also making caller ID on TV available to those who have standard voice service as long as they also have FiOS Internet. The Internet service is necessary because that is how a FiOS customer gets access to the Verizon Call Assistant service to activate and manage the caller ID on TV menus, Lee explained.
Separately Thursday, Verizon said FiOS TV subs in New Jersey, Delaware and the greater Philadelphia region received upgrades this week to their interactive media guide which provided a number of new features, including: personalized video-on-demand recommendations; the ability to order premium programming packages from Showtime and ESPN; gaming widgets; and simplified navigation with the addition of shortcuts in the guide.
Verizon does not charge extra for the new guide features, which have already been available in other FiOS markets includes New York and Massachusetts.

I am in Pennsylvania so we do not have it yet but I will tell you that I am looking forward to this. We had it with our last provider and it really is a nice/convenient feature when I am downstairs without a cordeless phone and I do not feel like running up the stairs to see who it is. I am interested in hearing some feedback as well.

I have it. It gives you the option of how long it stays on the screen.2,5,10 or 15 seconds.
It also gives you the option of position on the screen. top left, bottom left or bottom right.
Caller ID comes up in a 2" x 7" rectangle.

can't get it to work

The Caller ID option showed up today in my DVR Settings, but when I push the "Check Availability" button, it tells me "CallerID on TV is not available because you must have CallerID on your home phone line for this." Trouble is, I DO have caller ID on my Verizon phone line, and I've had it for a couple of years. When I have an hour to kill waiting on hold, I'll call Tech Support to hear their excuse.

I've heard of other people having the exact same problem. The solution for them appeared to be resetting the box - not just unplugging it, but actually having them reset it, which you can do via your My Verizon account.

Still can't get CallerID to work on TV

Tried it, but resetting the box didn't help.

IT WORKS!

The CallerID option reappeared over the holidays, I activated it, and it really works. Also includes Call Assistant web access to your voicemails, something VOIP cable providers have been providing for years. You'd think The Phone Company would have been first out of the box with these features! However overdue, they're much welcomed.

I am in Boston,

Checled it's availability and was told NO, because I have 'distinctive ring' feature

(2nd phone number, rings my line differently so I know a business call is coming in).

So, no go if you have Distinctive Ring. I called Verizon and they said they could turn off my Distinctive Ring. Good Answer....NOT! :)

BTW, I got callerid on my Tivos (both of them), so another reason to delegate the cable box to the bowels of the basement for On-demand use only! It connects to my big tv by HDMI 40-foot cable for rare use).

I'm in Huntington, we're fed from the same head end, so try rebootoing your box, either from the account website or simply by unplugging the power cord, waiting 10+ seconds and plugging it back in. If you do, in fact, have Verizon phone service with Caller ID, you should see the Menu option to activate it. Once you choose "yes," they'll send you an e-mail to activate the Call Assistant website where you can track your phone calls, your voicemails, and even set up e-mail notification every time someone leave you a voicemail. Good luck!

I finally got a call back from Verizon a week after opening up a ticket. Apparently they are using an old database (which should be upgraded by the end of the month) and because i ported over my number when switching, it is not a "Verizon number" yet.

I guess I need to wait until the end of the month.
