Any SD up-scaling improvements w/ 622

I hate the quality of SD at 1080i on my 942 compared to my old D* UltimateTV box upscaled by my HDTV. Every time I've complained about this issue, it gets dismissed on these forums, but my SD content looks like analog cable (or a low band internet stream) on my 942, so I have a tendency to watch nothing but my HD line-up. Actually, any improvements at all aside from a few new feeds? I've poured through many threads here and I really can't decide whether the upgrade is worth the hassle, regardless of cost. How long is it going to be before the MPEG-4 bandwidth advantage is realized in terms of quality for existing MPEG-2 feeds? I'd love to have Universal HD back (from voom), but considering that I have flawless OTA HD, is there any real advantage with the 622 (predicted within, say 6 mos)? Lastly, does the 622 do anything but "partial zoom" for 4:3 content? A more advanced scaling mode seems way past due.

Wow you get up early eh.

You know the saying crap in crap out?

Well I can say that even with an over compressed Dish signal it is still way better than the cable I have available but may be not for you.

Dunno on the zoom issue but hoping the signal gets better from Dish on the SD channels, well...............

Aside from Mpeg 4 capable I don't know what may be different, perhaps all the HD outputs being live all the time? Unsure

You can try what I did, watch you favorite shows that are in SD on a smaller TV set as they look very good on my 19 inch Mitsubishi.:)

I did not have a 942, but the SD looks a lot better from the 622 than my 522. Also it has 4 zoom modes: stretch basically stretches 4x3 to 16x9, zoom will zoom in until 4x3 content reaches the sides, partial zoom makes letter box SD fill the screen, normal and grey bars are the same except one has black bars one has grey. Hope this helps.

The SD picture I get from my 622 is superior to what I was getting off both my series 1 or series 2 Tivo.

Can't speak to 942 but

I don't know what the "guts" are in the 942 but I can say that compared to my 921 the VIP211 that I have is a nice improvement on SD. One would assume that the "guts" are the same for the 622 as the 211 as far as upscaling. Of course every channel is different but overall it is much better. Gerry

I echo everything wied said, SD from my 622 via component looks better than iy did from my 522 via S-Video.

I also think that using the 622's zoom modes, instead of my set's zoom modes is an improvement - the picture not only looks better (I only zoom on letterboxed SD content, like SciFi Fridays), but you get to keep all of the 622's OSD on the screen, whereas some of it gets clipped by my set's zoom modes.

I watch everything at my set's native resolution: 720p.

How is your 942 attached to your TV and what kind of TV do you have?

I have a 921 using DVI to connect to my Samsung DLP set and the SD picture quality is very good. Before the 921 I had a 721 that used the S-video connection and the picture quality was not as good.

I have to disagree. SD on the 622 via either DVI / HDMI or Component looks terrible - especially compared to the same SD via the 622's S-Video connection, which looks great. It's not a whole lot different than either the 811 or 942 which also had terrible SD PQ using the digital connections. The 942 did have a great SD picture via composite though.

I have yet to find a better approach than having both a digital connection and a composite (S-Video) connection and switching between the two inputs for HD & SD. It was the best way with the 942 and still the best way for the 622 - at least on my TV.

That's strange that there would be a difference. It must be the TV's that are different. My understanding is that the SD signal is upgraded to 720p or 1080i depending on how your receiver is set.

Other people have posted elsewhere that upgrading to the 622 gave them better SD pq than their older receiver.

I should have my 622 installed on the 29th and if I find a change from my 921 I'll post what I find.

Agree. I just started doing this with my 622. I used Battlestar Gallactica as a reference (lots of black and fast motion panning) and there was no question with some tweaking that the S video input looked better than the HDMI input. However, I did notice that it varied from SD channel to SD channel. Some seemed to show no difference at all between the two connections. Still, it's an easy enough fix and I recommend it.

i might be the minority but my picture quality deteriorated when i moved from my old 510 to the new 622. the picture quality looked much better when i was watching with my old s-video connection compared to the hdmi cable i use now.

The trouble with having this kind of discussion about PQ is that it's so subjective to our individule perceptions and relative to what one is used to seeing.

Unless otherwise noted, I'm talking PQ for SD only here. The HD PQ has been good on all 3 HD receivers.

I've had / have a 501, 508, 811, 942, 622. The best overall SD was through the S-Video of my 508 and the composite (rca) of the 942.

When the 811 first came out you couldn't get decent SD from any output, then after one of the 10,000 software upgrades, the SD PQ got fairly decent from the S-Video. When I got the 942, I thought I'd take a SD PQ hit because it doesn't have an S-Video but I was pleasantly surprised that the good 'ol yellow rca composite gave a real good SD picture.

Now I havent had the 622 very long, so really can't make much of a judgment but it appears the SD from the S-Video is about as good as the 942 but not quite as good as the old 508.

Also a factor is I know I have to make some picture position adjustments on the TV from the service menu now that I have the 622.
