Any New HD Channels Coming?

CES was disappointing for existing Dish customers, that's for sure.

Cash flow issues, perhaps????

Maybe Dish can get a big, fat, non-bid government contract to provide satellite service in Iraq. That should enhance revenues.

Yup thats true.

Its like someone pressed a huge pause button at Dish Network.
Hey, where are Cinemax HD and the HD RSNs you said were coming back in September???

Seriously, as long as things remain status quo at DirecTV, then I'm expecting no additional HD from E*. I don't blame them...why incur addition programming expenses and bandwidth headaches when they are already way ahead of D*? It just makes more business sense to spend the money funding various new customer and upgrade promotions in exchange for an 18-month commitment.

Oddly, it's D* to blame for the lack of any new HD these days at E*.;)

Guess you didn't read the Echostar press conference recap where I asked Charlie about the HD RSNs.

I was also told on the floor that the reason Dish was giving out outdated HD info in their press packets was because they were supposed to have Cinemax HD and had brochures printed up with them listed which they could not use and thus they gave out old HD info in their press packs.

Or paying off for the lost Law suits.

Patience it is comming just not as fast as you want it, the world won't end tomorrow just because you don't have another HD channel to watch.

Well right now there are not that many new HD Networks to add. Yes Direct made some claims to add new HD Channels. But they must wait just like everyone else too see if those networks get their HD Channel launched first. So until these networks get their HD Channels up and running no one can get them. So it becomes a wait see and most of these networks will not be ready to try until September.

Dish needs to clear echostar7 (119) transponders 15, 20 and echostar5 (129)transponders 1, 2, 4, 5 and get those channels on spotbeams, that would open up 6 conus transponders and use that for 18-22 additional HD channels.

I calculate (may be wrong) DISH has 2,166 Mbps (38 Mbps x 57 transponders) of Conus bandwidth

110 echostar8/10 19 conus
119 echostar7 16 conus
129 echostar5 22 conus
Total 57

50hd channels would take 16 conus transponders
And the remaining 40 conus transponders
at 3.16Mbps per would produce 480 SD
Channels.

The way I see it, Dish is going to throw allot of conus
HD bandwidth to RSN's and PPV sports.

echostar 5, 7, 8, 10 (129, 110, 119) channels sorted by transponder (conus)

Oh Yeah?

119 TP 15 is leased to NPS. So don't expect the ATL and SF locals on TP15 to move to a spotbeam.

Don't expect KTLA, WPIX, KWGN, WSBK, or WWOR to move to spot beams as they are Superstations.

As far as 129 the channels you listed are HD locals. Ceil is launching a spot beam bird to 129. Maybe some of the spots will be aimed at the US (129 is a Canadian slot that Dish is leasing some TP space)

I counted 87 spotbeams on EchoStar X

Pretty sure all transponder on EchoStar 5 (129.0°W) are controlled by DISH

129.0°W EchoStar 5
129.0°W Intelsat Americas 7

EchoStar has had a much easier time winning FCC approval to move the EchoStar 5 satellite into a Canadian orbital slot on behalf of a Canadian start-up company called Ciel Satellite Communications, in which SES Global also has part ownership.

On June 30 the FCC approved the move of EchoStar 5 to Ciel’s Canada-registered 129 degrees west position.

EchoStar 5 will not be used for Canadian broadcasting, but to provide high-definition television programming to EchoStar’s U.S. customers.

However, it will occupy the Canadian orbital position long enough for Ciel to build and launch its own satellite by late 2008.
