Hi all,
newbie here...thinking about jumping into satellite, and have been evaluating both camp. I know you can lease 942 for $250 a month back, but now that D* is selling $299-100rebate, want to know if 942 is free now yet or not. Thanks!

I doubt that Dish will lower their price to compete with Directv. Directv is blowing out all of their existing hd tivos because they are moving to the new mpeg4 NDS hd receivers. They would like to replace all the Tivos if they could. Dish is staying with thier current 942 design and will be moving to replace all of them with an mpeg4 version like the rumored 962 receiver, that is supposed to be able to do multiple hd tvs and have a hard drive that records upto 100 hours of hd. I see a lot of Dish hd promotions once they move to mpeg4 next year.

I paid the $250 lease upgrade fee on the 942, but would gladly purchase a 942 or two if E* were to offer a similar deal; $199 w/2 year commitment. Also, what's the hold up on adding USB storage? Even the crappy Adelphia box lets you attached a SATA Hard Drive to their HD DVR.

Direct offered me a HDTV tivo for $350 if I came back (that is all the rebates and credits included) three weeks ago.
DISH offered me a 942 for $749.
I am now with direct and my tivo works great. My 501 had to be disconnected and reconnected every couple of weeks.
