I had an interesting call with a Voom CSR about an antenna upgrade. She cited Antennaweb.org for authority that in my zip code, 06897, there were only two DT off-air stations currently operating. Sure enough if I look on this site she is correct. However, the site is blatantly wrong! A much more accurate site is http://www.2150.com/broadcast/default.asp, which contains FCC database as of 12/25/04. After entering my longitude and latitude on the site it discloses at least 10 DT stations in operation out of NYC and several others in Connecticut. Beware: don't let the Voom CSRs cite Antennaweb as authority. There is more to this incredible story of CSR misinformation and I have an acceleration call later in the day. More later.

guess it just depends on where you are, but antennaweb has always shown great information for me.

Antennaweb

I too find antennaweb to be totally useless. Using my address it reports zero available stations. In fact, I receive every channel operating out of L.A. and that's 30+ stations. I have written to them and have received no response. A totally useless, lame website which does more harm than good for a lot of people, especially those in fringe reception areas. I live about 50 miles out of L.A.

Funny you should post this now. I spent this weekend in vain trying to get my Fox and WB affiliate. Their towers are right in line with the other stations I am getting and even a a few tenths of a mile closer.

So I decided to call my Fox affiliate this morning. Well the locations of those towers are correct. But they are only broadcasting analog from their. Their digital signal is coming from a low power tranmitter at their studios which is about 30 degrees out of line with the other stations.

The engineer for the station was going to notify antennaweb. They are planning on moving to the big tower in about 5 months.

I'm checking the other site now but it is slow as molasses.

The saga continues. I have now literally spent hours talking to Voom CSRs, two of them in the "escalation" unit. It turns out that the antenna upgrade which had been scheduled was cancelled by the installer with the notation "no line of sight". I had called and e-mailed this installer to set up the appointment, Installs Inc. not having honored the date and time given to me by the CSR but instead referring me to the installer. The installer never had the decency to advise me that he had unilaterally cancelled. In fact, he never responded to my phone message or e-mail. The line of sight argument is brand new. In past calls the CSRs refused to recognize that Antennaorg is just dead wrong about which stations in NYC are broadcasting DT (it doesn't list any of the network flagship stations).

The line sight issue seems to be because I have trees around my house. This doesn't wash because I am receiving CBS, Fox and ABC, but not as reliably as I'd like, hence the upgrade request.

I am continuing to pursue this. I have insisted upon a different installer but have agreed to pay $45 if the second installer continues to deny reality. The irony is that the existing OTA antenna was not oriented correctly for optimized NYC channels in the first place, it's pointed due South (180 degrees) and should be oriented Southwest (231 degrees).

This whole thing is a sad commentary on Voom. I laugh every time I call their 800 number which tells me that if I am a "valued Voom customer" to press 3. Somehow, I must keep getting the "unvalued Voom customr" CSRs.

I really want Voom to succeed but I am very frustrated right now. I am keeping my D* lifeline for now but in time I will not continue to bear the cost of two satellite providers.

More later.
