Recently added a super simple Diseqc decoder to the collection of FTA related projects on my website.
With it you can observe the signals being sent from your satellite receiver to switches, movers and LNBs.

Is this project very "arduino-able" - using an arduino in place of the PIC?

I don't know ASM and my arduino coding "skills" is based on looking at arduino code samples and using the online arduino program command reference. I wonder if I can figure out just enough from the ASM code to be able to recode it in arduino code or....?

The asm code is copy written, but open source for non commercial use. I try to comment enough to give the code reader enough to figure out what's happening and would be happy to answer questions that come up.

I learned how to solder but I would not have a clue where to get all the little parts or how to start from scratch.
A kit with instructions and parts, I could do that.

Nice thanks, Ive been wanting to build a diseqc interface for my arduino l298 actuator dish mover. right now its serial interface only. But Id really like to be able to use v1.2 to move it. so once it gets cold and Im sitting board inside Im defn going to build this.

I just ordered a PIC16f628A

Is the assumption correct you also need something to interface with that PIC to burn code into it and that the PIC is a one-use only chip like in once you burn code to it, you can't erase it and burn updated code to it?

You will need a programmer to flash the hex code to the PIC.
A google search for "PIC programmer" should return a array of choices. I'd get one with a 28 pin ZIF socket in case you get addicted to PICs
PIC micros with an "F" designation have flash memory and can be re-programmed supposedly thousands of times.

Once the data is ready for the LCD it's ASCII and pretty easy to work with. I've build circuits with RS-232 in the past, but most computers are USB nowadays.
I haven't turned up any of the new PICs with that ability - yet.
All of the links are combined now, but the link should work so I'll check later.
