Another BUD find

Well what do you know...

I found a BUD just outside my building.

Unfortunatley, it is damaged. I'll get a PIC of it next week.

It still has the motor attached and the LNB mounted. The dish is still mounted to the pole with the cement anchor.

The dish has a wire mesh that has been punctured by several other poles.

Question is, is it worth salvaging? I could remove the motor and LNB in hopes they still work, but the dish has frame damage along with the support poles that hold the LNB. What a mess.

This could be my first step into the C-band dark side...

It sounds like the dish itself may not be usable, but if it's got a decent actuator, polar mount, polarotor, LNB and a good piece of 3 1/2 or 4 inch pipe it's worth grabbing for the parts.

Good point. I could pick it apart and take it home in pieces.

I'll talk to the grounds keeper for permission to haul it off.

If there are some panels you can salvage, and you have the room, you could do for the north west what TurboSat does for his neighborhood.
Offer panels to fix other dishes! - :up
It's a hell of a public service.
Probably need pictures to know if that's a worthwhile undertaking.

Ok, I got some good pictures today. A sad sight indeed.

I got permission to cart off the parts but I have to be done by Thursday of next week.

Actually, only one quarter of the dish frame looks bent. Aside from the punctures, it could possibly be fixed.

Perhaps those who know better can tell me if I'm wasting my time. It looks like a six foot diameter dish made up of wire mesh quarter sections bolted together.

The LNB looks like it may be undamaged. The motor thingy looks like it might work, but hard to tell until I can get to it.

I would have to take a sledge to the concrete base, I think, to get it into the back of my truck.

The dish is toast. Take the Corotor and LNB's and maybe the actuator and haul the rest to the trash. Keep the mount if it's not broke and you could use it someday for a polar mount for an offset dish.

I was able to talk to the guys who moved it. They said if they knew somebody wanted it, they wouldn't have bashed it up...

That's like saying, "I wouldn't have driven my car into the wall if I knew somebody would rather have it."

I don't know what the Corotor or actuator is, but I'll look them up.

The Corotor and LNB's are in pics 3 and 4...the actuator is in 5 and 6...

This will give me some experience with a C dish.
I'll keep my eyes open for another find. There are a lot of C dishes here in Wyoming. I still haven't tried to talk my neighbor out of his yet. I know he's not using it.

It was one of these I believe. A Perfect 10 6.5 foot with C/Ku Corotor with servo motor.
This is a picture of mine. It had a corotor until I replaced it with a DMX741. Looking to upgrade to a 10 footer for S2 feeds.

Fizbi, Worse case scenario you could always experiment with it. Maybe try and make a fixed dish out of it? Maybe find some mesh of some kind to patch/replace. Depends on how much work you want to do, with trying to salvage an almost hopeless cause lol...I've done it before....But I've brought a mangy dog home and made something out of it too lol

I still haven't tried to talk my neighbor out of his yet. I know he's not using it.

I waited around and 3 local mesh dishes disappeared in one year. Your neighbor's dish is worth asking about now; maybe he'll want it removed.

I have to agree with toucan-man, waiting too long to ask could be a mistake.
Like him I've seen a number of good dishes disappear. Following the appearance of Dishnet or DirectTV trucks in this area, the metal salvage vultures arrive.
Some of these vultures are so bold here that they trespass to see what you've got in your yard.

That's a Chapparal Corotor with both C and Ku LNBs along with the servo motor to switch polarity. I've seen those sell for $80 to $100 on fleabay. That Super Jack isn't my "first" choice for an actuator but they do work and I have one and it does what I ask it to do. Counts on them are somewhat wanting but other than that they seem to be a "well" built unit. It's definitely worth keeping!!

The polar mount "might" be worth pulling off if it's free. Who knows, you might run up on another one along the way that needs one of those.

In these days of dieing Cband, it's probably a good idea to save as much of anything that you can as the market has dried up and parts are going to get scarce!!

And besides, you can NEVER have too much STUFF!!
