After 2 1/2 years, the HDMI jack on my 622 broke for no apparent reason today. I didn't touch the cable or move anything, although I moved the stand it sits on about a foot and back over a week ago. I just turned on my A/V receiver and I had no signal. I wiggled the cable and it started working briefly, but then it quit for good. There's no position I can prop the cable in that doesn't at least give heavy distortion if I get a signal at all.
I'm strongly considering just running component cables since I have more RCA cable than I know what to do with, although I'll want to get an optical cable for surround sound. But in case I change my mind, I have a few questions.
First, how much hassle is it to get them to waive the external HD fee so I could copy my recordings? (Not that I really want to pay for a hard drive that I have no other use for...)
Second, is the HDMI jack problem 100% fixed in the DVRs they're giving out now? The reason I ask is because I've seen people say that they started screwing the jacks down rather than just soldering them, but my broken unit has a screw above the jack. Is this where the screw is on the new ones, or is it something else? (Also, I know these units run hot, but mine is over 105 degrees F in the vicinity of the HDMI jack. Is that normal?)
Finally, if I just keep using the broken one, and I decide later to cancel Dish, are they going to have any problem with me sending back a broken DVR?
