Tolstoy's story of Russian aristocracy scandal.
The film itself was shot in a different way. Essentially it would go back and forth between a stage setting, as though you were watching a play, real life, and sometimes it is surreal. It was a bit hard to keep track of in the beginning since there are a few characters and it bounces around between them and it takes a bit to get your bearings as to who is who and who is related to who. I never read the book, so I was not familiar with the characters.
I enjoyed the film. It is not a wide audience film, more of an art film. It is almost like going to see a play with a large part of the movie taking stage on play like sets. It is a movie also of forbidden love, adultery, and the decaying virtue of Anna Karenina.
