Since I live in FL and "moved" to NY, I don't get the locals in FL and some of the NY ones since I can't get the NY spotbeams.
Would the AM21 work for me to at least get the FL locals? Or would it not work right since my receivers think I am in NY?
Also, do I need an AM21 for each receiver, or just 1 will work with all?

All recievers need their own AM21. If you get a OTA signal where you are, you will with the AM21. The AM21 setup starts with you manually entering a zip code for channels you expect to recieve.

The exception being that if you have an HR34, the C31 clients can access AM21 stuff live or recorded. Otherwise, you can always record from the AM21 and playback on any receiver in a whole-home environment.

The AM21 doesnt care where you are

What receiver is it hooked up to? Reason I ask is the HR34 "scans" for channels while the others (HR2X and R22) loads a database supplied by D*
The HR34 wont load a channel if you get no signal whereras the others will load them. Here in Minneapolis the market is huge (runs from Iowa border to almost to Canada) so when I used my R22 it loaded stations that were 200 miles away (but still in the mpls dma)....the HR34 wont do that and if it can't find a signal it won't log the channel

I've been a "mover" with D* for almost 3 years now and never had an issue with my AM21

What Iceberg said (although my HR24 no longer loads channels I don't receive over the air anymore. It does not add the "missing" channels, though...)

Iceberg,
I didn't buy the AM21 yet. But I have and HR34, C31, and 2 HR21s. If the HR21s use a database, then they will be looking for the wrong channels since I "moved". Or is there a way around that?

When you get a AM21 the first thing it does is ask you for a zipcode

On the HR21's (or anything BUT the HR34/Genie) it will load whatever locals that zipcode associates with. When I had my R22 (and before I found a list of what channel is in the database) I use to plug in random zip codes for folks here to verify. So I sit here in Minneapolis (55402 zip as example) and plug in 04401 in the "zip code" screen of the AM21 and it would load Bangor Maine's channel list

The HR34 only scans and loads what it can find. (so even though you plug in a FL zip, it will only load what locals it can find). The only thing is the stations in the "database" will have guide info

I think the AM21 will use what ever data base is associated with the zip code entered in antenna setup.
So living in FL, enter a FL zip.
It those channels exist wherever you're located it will tune to them.

But the difference between the HR34 and the others is the HR34 will only scan in what stations you can receive.
The others will load the database which in some markets gives you lots of stations you cant tune to. My market (Minneapolis) being one of them

Minneapolis is a huge DMA and has lots of stations depending on where in the market you are.
As example in Minneapolis you have (full powered) 2,4,5,9,11,23,29,41
Northern Part of MN (Bemidji....200 miles away but still in the market) there is 9,12,26. 12 is the same as 4 and 9 is PBS (whereas in Mpls 9 its Fox)....they also have some low powered stations that are not in the database
West Central part of the market (150 miles away) has 7,10,22,42
All of those stations show in the database but in my case I dont get anything other than Mpls stations.

I am near West Palm Beach, so my locals I guess would be the Miami area.

BTW, is this a "leased" device, and do I need to activate it and pay a monthly fee, or can I just buy one on ebay, and start using it?

nope. Some people are over thinking this waaaaayyy too much

get the AM21
put in zipcode
get locals for area
watch locals via OTA and "moved" locals via satellite
enjoy TV :)

here is what is in the database so again the HR21's would only get these (the HR34 scans what you can pick up)

My question is, if he claimed to be in NY but uploaded FL locals via OTA, would the receiver send the signal to the company? I have similar interests via another provider.

no the OTA locals dont "trigger" anything. As a "mover" with both companies as long as the address you give doesnt have service there already or if you are in Canada dont plug in the ethernet cable you'll be fine
The last time I had Dish (over a year ago) I set up my 211k with Duluth, MN locals (180 miles away) and used the OTA for my local Minneapolis stations. Even better? DIRT set me up and they KNEW I was a "mover"....and they didnt care ;)
