Hello I had a Direct Tv person come out to look if I could get any signal. It was a Friday about 2:30 P.M. on a rainy day. When he comes up and I open the door he told me I was unable to get it and left. But what made me mad is that he didn't even try to see if he could get any signal. When I saw that someone on the floor below me had a direct tv sat. and they were in a worst place than I was. I am just woundering if there is a way they could use a extender or something to get signal or if I can get signal since the person below me can? I live Fargo,ND 58104 if that helps any?

It is all about line of sight . Maybe some trees or a part of a building is in the way . Either that or just another lazy installer .

There is nothing in the middel of the buildings there is a divider between mine and my neighbors pato. But like I said cant you use a extender to make the sat out farther. And the dish below is pointed right at the building pretty much? I dont know that works Ill be posting a image later of what I mean

They do have different mounting options , one of which can move the dish outward a bit . I am guessing you are in a Townhouse or apartment .? Pictures would help . You need a clear path to the South- Southwest sky me thinks . This is your address picture below . Apparently BEFORE your building was built . This should help though

From looking at the pictures, I would bet that you don't have a LOS. I will also bet that the installer who came out knows that your apartment says that your dish can not extend beyond your apartment patio. Most apartments have that in their instructions.

So the installer looked at it and said no.

Now you "MAY" be able to make some special or buy a special mount that will get the dish out to where it has LOS. Is your apartment going to allow that? It's gonna be pretty crazy looking.

Also who ever installed that one below you should get their nutz kicked. The next installer that has to come out and deal with that is going to be pissed. From looking at it, I would bet the tennant below you did that. Probably has a pretty low signal, or is only hitting the 101 satellite. With the way Direct has the signal verification that makes you have the signals perfect, a mount like that would not work.

Personally looking at the pictures, if I was the installer I would have walked away as well.

I am not sure. When I moved in all they told me about a rule was that I cant drill the sat to any part of the building they didn't say anything else

Also before I moved here I had to get direct TV at my other place still couldn't there but my neighbor had a dish right next to me and the service man said if I asked him if I could go of his sat since he said I could do that if they let me. Would that work here to since I have a neighbor above me that has a direct tv dish. Would they be a way to go off there signal?

Right there ends that disscussion. No drilling means he would have had to put it on a tripod. NLOS from your patio. All the others were probably in before that rule was put in place. from looking at the other installs I can see why, they look like crap. So the managment says no more mounting.

As an installer I would not do it. What if the neighbor moves out 3 months later? Then you don't have a location that works, and the new person in that apartment may not want your dish there.

Something no one has considered is that the dishes in the picture are Phase III which point at 110. You need a Slimline that points at 101, slightly to the east, or left. That MAY give you los, but just barely, and that's only if the landlord will let you mount the dish over a common area, the space below your railing. If I was you I'd get a compass and see exactly what the azimuth is from your balcony.

Another thing, would your landlord allow a pole mount? It would solve your los problem. What about the roof using a non penetrating mount?

What are you talking about. The Phase III points at 101. If you are talking about center aim sure the 110 is at the center of the dish, but that is not going to change the fact that 101, from what I can see in those pictures is NLOS.

The dish in the picture in the first floor apartment, has the mast kicked way out from level to get what looks like a very poor LOS. Installers have requirements to meet, I don't see them being met in those pictures.

A pole mount is probably the only real solution, problem is no drilling. So that means attaching cables it going to be kind of tricky.

I'm talking about geometry. If you want a further explanation, let me know.

Tell me how the shape of the dish is going to make any difference for this install. Other than the reception from the pan to the LNB, it's not going to change the fact that the satellite is blocked by the building.

You are talking about inches here. This guy need several feet. Plus the fact that now he is dealing with a much larger dish, that is far more picky in the way it is pointed.

Why give advise that will not help the poster in anyway. All your post was, is a look at me, someone told me how the dish collects signal, now I am super duper smart.

It's pretty obvious for anyone that has installed, by looking at those pictures, that apartment has NLOS, for any kind of install that would meet requirements. I say that with the fact that I have delt with apartments long enough to know how they allow them to be installed. Poster already stated they don't want anything attached. So unless they allow a pole mount in the yard, the install wont go in. Most apartments want them located within 3' of the building as long as they don't have to mow around them, if they allow them.

Why are you making this personal? Did I do something to you at some point? Really, did I? I'm trying to help the guy and you are taking shots at me.
