I'm sure this has been posted somewhere but basically one of the purposes of a forum is to share experiences specific to what we're working on whether where gloating about our successes or sulking about our failures.

Lately I've been wanting to expand my setup to include an additional receiver. Since I'm the only one in the house that watches my FTA programming, I knew that what ever works for me would be fine. Another words I did not have to take in consideration of my wife's inability to navigate and learn the workings of a different receiver. I just had to make sure to keep my cost down!

I use the Alien 2 as my main receiver and the Traxis 6000 HD as the receiver I use to assist me when I am fine tuning my setup on the roof.

If I was to expand and add another receiver, the question of changing out my single LNBF's for dual's have crossed my mind. Since I'm the only one that watches I figured I would leave that alone. I've tested my setup with the receivers I have (including the Amiko Nano as a backup) so I know it works.

Well a few weeks ago, I was given a Kindle Fire HDX as a going away gift. At first and actually for a few weeks I wondered how I would even consider using this new device. Then a few days the light bulb went off.

I knew I had read threads before that allowed you to use a tablet remotely by syncing it up with a receiver (Amiko), so I thought "what the heck", I'll give it a try.

My first attempt was a failure. I realized that I did not understand how these tablets worked and knew that I would have to get very comfortable with it before I could attempt to pull this off. So since I've been extremely busy and basically developed the attitude, "I don't want to do anything this weekend", I decided to spend as much time as needed to learn what I had originally set out to do and that was find an alternative to buying a new receiver.

Well I did it. This morning I completed setting up the "big2small" app that allows me to watch my satellite anywhere in the house. I also learned how to mirror the image onto my smart TV where I was contemplating setting up another receiver. So without spending any money on a new receiver, I was able to succeed in meeting my goal of setting up another system in my house.

I did learn that the Kindle Fire was not the easiest to manipulate but it can be done. My understanding is it is not as straight forward as other Android tablets but never the less it can be done. Victory is mine!

Now since I've completed something which I consider worth while and fun, I guess I need to go do my weekend chores. Bummer!

Hopefully this is an appropriate place to start this thread. Good luck in your FTA endeavors.....

Very cool to hear! I love to read stories of stuff, when people decide they want to acomplish something and do it. Sometimes it takes a week or two to figure out how to make it work, but it gets done.
Nice story Ray!!

Excellent use of the Kindle. Kudos to you for figuring it out. Just one question, can you also control the receiver via the Kindle?

Jorgek...I can do the basics. Since I have all my dish's fixed, I can access the channels which my LNBF's are pointing too. I use a multi-lnb system. 7 satellites between two dish. I presume if you have a motorized system, then you will only be able to view what the receiver is set on.

Sounds like your Wife is like mine, ie, can't even turn the system on! That's neat stuff to know all right, and my Wife does have a Kindel? Hummm! :wink

I had a similar experience years ago when I learned how to play DVD movies in my desktop computer using my AZ Box Elite across my LAN. I just love this technology stuff!

I suppose your wife is trying to figure out another way to get you to go away since the Kindle Fire didn't work. :D

Jorgek....I'm not an expert with the tablets and my experiences are only limited to the Kindle but I bet you can. If you can download apps then you should be able to set it up. I have to give Joe credit form FridgeFTA on how to do this. There is a thread which caught my eye on "big2small". I bet there may be something here too.

My wife is very understanding for the most part. Her general attitude is if I (that is her) can't operate then I (she) will just throw it outside. As for the Kindle Fire HDX, she is jealous. She has the second generation but not near as nice as mine. She tried claiming it as hers since she knows I only read books on paper.....

Yesterday I showed it how to mirror on the big screen. She is thinking about getting a new one so she can watch all of her downloaded content.

Michael...the going away gift was from my previous employer. If that was her intent to get rid of me and she knew what I would learn about the Kindle, she might have given me one a long time ago....

Lone Gunman.....I'm even her GPS. She has yet to grasp the things we take for granted.......

I just bought one of these to use with my Amiko A3, http://www.pandawill.com/cube-talk-...android-42-ips-8gb-3g-wcmda-white-p88652.html

From what I understand, you can control it with an Android tablet and watch TV from the A3 on your tablet. http://www.amiko-a3.com/#Mobile

I have an iPhone 5 which is too small to be useful but my two tablets are a clunky old HP tablet which doesn’t do much of anything and a very old 1st generation iPad 1.0 that also doesn’t do much of anything except crash constantly. Personally I believe Apple sabotaged it with iOS 5.1 which it is permanently locked to. Why should they leave people with a perfectly working tablet? What would be the incentive to replace it?

Anyway, I have one of those $99 HP tablets and when I found they were releasing ANOTHER tablet I read up and found they are severely limited. Someone suggested the Cube Talk “phablet” which has tons of features and as a bonus, I can connect it directly to my DSLR to control the camera and to review photos in the field.

The only thing that scares me is it being infected coming directly from China so I need to find out how to reflash it with a known, clean operating system that’s also not Chinese language which this one will have.

Dee Ann....I bow to those that are more technologically advanced; I wonder if these tablets are capable to control the functions of a motorized system?

Ray, you can control motorized systems with ALi Big2Small, The Amiko App for Mini HD SE, the Spark1 Android App and the Spark2 App for A3. The other day when I installed my Amiko DM3800 motor I used my tablet to sit outside and drive the motor all over to test it before putting the dish on there.

Just add that to my project list. I have a motor and a choice of C-Band and KU LNBF's; just waiting on a good very inexpensive 1.2 meter dish......

Also, Joe....thanks for all your help. You were the one that got me moving forward.

Big2Small only works with 3511 and newer chipsets. Does not work with older ones like 3606 and 3601. Also needs to be enabled by the engineers to be supported. In North America, yes this means Amiko.

Joe...thanks for the answer. I had no idea. I just knew it worked with my Amiko Alien 2.

You mean the Spark1 Player for Alien2, right? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.soft.fulan

Big2Small is an ALi program for boxes like Amiko Mini HD SE. Quite a bit simpler than the Spark version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alitech.dvbtoip

For reference this is the Amiko version that works better with Mini HD SE: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.amikostb.alistream
