AL EAST 2009

What a nail biter it turned into in the last few innings. Offense really stepped up and showed what they're made of in the 8th! Go Sox!! On to the Phillies now..

Awesome game!!

Another great thing for the Sox: it seems like every night, a different member of the bullpen steps up. :up

Last night is was Saito's turn.

GREAT news: Jed Lowrie is starting his rehab assignment on Monday. With any luck, he could be on the Sox roster by the first week of July. :up

Seems like the Sox have 15 guys coming out of the bullpen who all throw 100 MPH.

Sandra

Why the obession with Jethro(Jabba) as a starter? Probably wouldn't of had Sabathia start the 8th last night if he was the set up guy. I also think Gerardi is over his head and makes some curious decisions, of course Cashman really hasn't given him any depth to work with.

Also, Nick Swisher seems like an OK dude, but he was freaking clueless running the bases in this series, WOW!

Swisher is one of the dumbest baseball players I've ever seen. Odd, since having a dad who was a major leaguer means he's been around baseball since day one. Seems like a fun guy to be with, though.

Don't know what's going to happen with Joba. Nobody does, and that includes Girardi, Cashman, etc. If the eighth inning is so important, why is Beckett, Wakefield, Lester, and everyone else wasting their time as a starter?

Joba is reportedly on a strict inning count this year (at the very most, 150). After 11 starts he is currently at 59.1 innings. The intention is to move him to the bullpen at some point later this season to keep the innings down.

After last night's game, you're one of the few NYY fans I've seen to not see the importance of that 8th inning go-to guy. Don't get me wrong, it's a tough decision about Joba, starter v. bullpen, especially with Wang struggling, but last night showed how important that role is...

Very true, because had they had that "go-to guy" last night, the outcome of the game very well could have been an entirely different story.

Report: Papelbon fined for pace-of-game violation

By: Alex Speier
According to the Daily-Item of Lynn, Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon was fined for a pace-of-game violation this week. The paper cited a source in saying that Papelbon was the first player to be fined for a violation this year. Papelbon was fined $1,000 for taking 3 minutes 34 seconds to enter the game, more than a minute more than his allotted time.
“The rules are the rules,” Papelbon told the paper. “But, I’m trying to figure out ways to where I can not get fined. Obviously, I don’t want to get fined or slow the game down, or be a nuisance to slow the game down. The fans want to see games that are three hours or so. I’m trying to figure that out right now to not get those fines, for sure.”

I'm not surprised. He was fined for this same violation last year, and has been warned already this year. I, personally, think it's a bogus rule.. but like Pap said...Rules are Rules. He just better pick up the pace if he doesn't want to keep forking out the $$.

Tonight's lineup:

Red Sox
1. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
2. J.D. Drew, RF
3. Kevin Youkilis, 3B
4. Jason Bay, LF
5. David Ortiz, 1B
6. Jason Varitek, C
7. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
8. Nick Green, SS
-- Jon Lester, LHP

Phillies
1. Jimmy Rollins, SS
2. Chase Utley, 2B
3. Jayson Werth, RF
4. Ryan Howard, 1B
5. Raul Ibanez, LF
6. Shane Victorino, CF
7. Pedro Feliz, 3B
8. Carlos Ruiz, C
-- Joe Blanton, RHP

I believe this is the only righty SP the Sox will face in this series, so this may be Papi's only start....

Yep, it will most likely be Bastardo tomorrow and Happ Sunday, both LHP's.

Yankee/Red Sox games lead the league in 'pace-of-game' violations. Between every hitter being brutally patient, walking to the plate hoping for a 10 pitch at bat, to Jason Varitek going to the mound 100 times an inning, to every batter stepping out of the box on every pitch (NOBODY was worse at that than Bernie Williams), it's not always easy to watch.

Cricket fans even think Yankee-Red Sox games take too long...and their matches last three days!

I, personally, don't mind a long game as long as it is an interesting one (which all Yank/Sox games tend to be!)
