Let’s just face it. You need internet service at home. You need it for schoolwork, work projects, and just to enjoy life. It’s one of those things that you feel like you just can’t live without. And just relying on your cell phone probably isn’t cutting it. I totally understand.
But on the other hand, it’s expensive. There can be hidden fees, teaser rates that expire after a year, and you might just think isn’t any other choice but the cable company. Like so many things today, it seems like you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place.
There’s a new benefit called the Affordable Connectivity Program. If you qualify, you can get up to $30 a month off your internet, as well as a discount of up to $100 for a new device. (If you’re on tribal land, you can get even more.) That’s a big enough chunk of money to turn internet from a luxury to a necessity. It may even be enough to completely cover the cost of a basic internet plan.
This service is provided by the government’s Federal Communications Commission. Here’s how you qualify (text straight from the FCC’s web site)
What it boils down to is, if you are getting pretty much any other benefit from the federal government, you probably qualify for this one. It’s just that simple.
Here’s how it works.

Once you do that, you’ll get connected with an expert who will review your availability, find out more about your area, and get to work. They’ll review all the internet providers in your area. There might be some you’re not aware of. You might even qualify for wireless internet, which gives great speeds and there’s no installation needed.
They’ll work with you to get all the federal paperwork taken care of, schedule your internet service start, and before you know it, you’ll be up and running with discounted internet service! Your kids will be able to do their homework and you’ll be able to enjoy the streaming entertainment everyone talks about.
Here’s the honest fact. If you already participate in one of these government programs, they have as much information as they need. There’s no real risk. In fact, there’s no downside at all. This program is just there to help folks get a leg up if they need one. If that sounds like you, give us a try!
