Adding an additional Hopper or 211k

We want to have an HD receiver that's not attached to our current Hopper for a studio above our detached garage. It has a single RG6 cable run to it, and when we had a 722k, we had a 211k at that location.

I now have a single Hopper receiver, and have read that we could still potentially add another 211k. Would it be possible to add another Hopper that doesn't see (share recordings with) the primary Hopper? Or, would it be easier to just add a purchased 211k? Also, would I need a different switch than the node that came with the Hopper?

For two hoppers you should use a dual node and that node needs 3 sat inputs from the dish. If you wanted another hopper that didn't communicate then you could run two more lines from a switch to a second duo node but I'm not sure the benefit of that over getting a dual node and running a line to the second Hopper.

I'm looking around in the Hopper and don't see a setting for it, but I was hoping it would be possible to set them to not communicate. I had the one node wired so that we could expand to 2 Hoppers, but didn't think about having to separate them. I think my dish has 3 outputs, which wouldn't allow for 2 nodes (with 2 inputs each), would it?

There isn't a setting to disable communication. And you would need a switch to get 4 signal lines for your nodes since the dish only has 3 outputs.

The same switch that would allow a 211k? That might be easier I suppose. I already have the EHD enable fee paid for the 211k, so that might make the most sense. And be cheaper monthly.

Officially the 211 is supposed to be used for RV/Tailgating, but yes a line from a switch would work or just a direct line from the 211 to the dish.

That will block the Hoppers from seeing eachother and basically puts each on its own network even though they are both connected to the same node and dish. This can be accomplised with no additional switches if you already have 3 wires running to the dish.

In my opinion you might as well go this route which will most likely be a $50 fee and free installation. If you go with the 211k you are going to need to purchase the receiver which will run a minimum of $99 and then have it installed.

Just make sure you specify that you need that isolator to whoever comes out. Its a $4 part but I myself as an installer rarely carry one unless its specified up front.

Thanks guys, that sounds like what I need. What is the difference in cost per month then (between extra 211k and Hopper)? Is there an additional DVR fee for the second Hopper? Also, how can I get them to add a second Hopper? Would I have to tell them I want two more Joeys and then decline the Joeys at installation? Sorry for all the questions; I've tried to decipher these from the dish.com, but that is proving difficult.

211k and Hopper cost the same per month, $7. The $10 DVR fee is an account level fee. So no second DVR fee.

You should be able to just upgrade to an additional Hopper with no extra Joey's. Check with a DIRT member on here and see what your upgrade options are.

I tried, and was denied...I read somewhere else that you can't have 2 Hoppers and no Joeys.

DIRT and local retailers have been able to get this setup taken care of. Of course, you can order 2 Joeys and tell the installer you do not want them.

I went ahead and ordered 1H/1J...I didn't want to wait for an OTA tuner--as installation wasn't available until 1/24--but now I can't order that until the order is complete.

Sorry about the OTA tuner order, this was something Dish put in recently. My guess is too many people ordered items that didn't work with their system and Dish put this in to prevent the orders from happening. I am surprised the install is over three weeks away? With whom did you place the order?

You have to be converted to a Hopper account for the ota module to show up. That only happens after the install.

It sounds like the isolators would block MOCA, but couldn't they still communicate with each other via common LAN/router if connected ?

To the OP. Why don't you want the Hoppers to see each other? If the studio is a rental unit, I'm not sure Dish would allow you to share one account.

Just tested this, installed the two isolators and the Hoppers could no longer see each other. Then I hooked both Hoppers up to my home network and they can now see each other's recordings and play them over the network.
