Activating used DVRs and STBs -- fees?

Does Dish charge "additional receiver fees" or "DVR fees" if you own the equipment?

E.g., can you return leased boxes, purchase used regular or DVR STBs and activate them without paying additional monthly fees?

Once you get past the first unit, Dish charges a additional receiver fee if you own the equipment and a leased receiver fee for leased. No way around this. Dvr fees are charged except for select models (older models hard to get through Dish, ie: 501, 508 and 721 are ones that come to mind although there may be others). DVR advantage package includes one dvr fee (you get charged for second and up) or the All Everything Package which included all dvr fees in it.

Further, older HD receivers will not be newly authorized to receive HD programming.
