Many folk here at SatelliteGuys.US may have never heard the name Gary Bourgois, but many old time satellite dish heads will know the name well.
Gary was the voice of the Satellite Hobbiest. Gary hosted a popular radio show which aired via satellite and was only about Satellite. The shows name was Friday Night Live.
Gary was like a mentor to me, I learned a lot of satellite techologies and a great many wild feeds on my old C Band dish thanks to Gary. I respected Gary so much that when Real Networks came to me and asked me to beta some new streaming software for them the first program I put on the Internet was Friday Night Live with Gary Bourgois.
Garys show was 3 hours long and we would only make the first hour (the news hour) available on the Internet as it took 4 hours to encode 1 hour of audio back then. Soon the technology improved and we were airing almost all the shows which aired on the network.
Soon though the network fell apart because of money problems and Gary managed to get all the shows back on satellite again on a new network, The Tech Talk Network. I worked with Gary Closely on TTN and even went out and started "The Tech Talk Network Cybergeek Gateway" which was a portal where you could listen to all the shows from the network.
As streaming technology improved, Friday Night Live with Gary Bourgois was one of the first shows on the internet aired LIVE in realtime on the internet via realaudio!
I was proud to share Gary's love of the satellite industry and spent many hours with Gary on the phone just talking about Satellite TV. I shared Gary's vision to inform people about Satellite TV and loved running the Cybergeek Gateway. It is because of Gary Bourgois that SatelliteGuys is here today.
Over the past few years Gary and I grew apart a bit, mainly because I no longer had a C Band dish, but I still talked to him regularlly over the year.
Tonight I got a sad email from a friend of mine telling me the sad news that Gary Bourgois has passed away. I have lost a friend and the satellite industry has lost a great voice.
I hope I can continue to follow Gary's vision and to keep helping people from around the world get the most from their satellite equipment.
On Friday 11/18 @ 9pm ET a Tribute show will be on Skybird Radio and WebLinks:
