I'm currently with D* and was looking at switching to Dish. I have the Slimline connection with D* with 2 HD-DVR receivers. Now From the dish only 1 cable come inside my apartment. I would like to know what receiver I may get? I would want 2 HD-DVR receivers and if dish installation is one cable from the dish coming into my apartment like I have now.

Thanks

No, it would be one line for each receiver from the antenna. Two HD DVRs would be two lines into the apartment. Remember, a second dual tuner HD DVR has a $17 monthly fee. The first receiver is included in the programming package cost. A 211k, a single tuner receiver with one sat tuner and one OTA tuner, can be turned into an HDDVR by adding an external HDD and paying a one-time fee of $40. It costs $7 per month.

Couldn't I have one line coming into the apt and then a 2-way splitter with one line going to each receiver? Wow that monthly fee for the second one is high.

Thanks

I don't see the 17.00 monthly fee. It say i would get the 612 receiver. How are those receivers?

Boobie1998

$17 is for a HD Duo DVR. $10 for the 2nd 612.

ps- since your first receiver is free of fee, your number one should be a HD Duo DVR, aka 722/722k

would I need asked them for the 722 receiver? If I would to submit an order it would say 2 612. would i need to get 2 722 or the 1st one 722 and the bedroom one 612 is ok?

Boobie1998

On the dishnetwork site select 3 TVs and select 2 of them for HD and
DVR. That should give you a 622/722 and a 612 receiver. The monthly
fee will be the same as 2 612s. The 622/722 will give you the ability to
have picture-in-picture on one of your TVs. Some people have said the
622/722 is more reliable than the 612.

skip the 612's and get 2 211's with a one time $40 hard drive activation fee and save some bucks

While the 211's are really nice with an external hd, they still only have one tuner which is a limitation. I went with a 612 when I upgraded my 625 recently. My adult son is very pleased with it and is rapidly filling the HD up!

If I add a 3rd tv but don't really have one, wouldn't i get charge a monthly fee for a standard receiver or just when tech comes advise there is now only 2 tvs.

I assuming that if I currently have D* that I can get Dish, no special difference in rules or install?

Boobie1998

Dish will install a completley new system: Dish Network reflectors, LNBF's and and new 2nd cable from reflector (they should replace the original cable from the DirecTV reflector, but may not), and Set-Top-Boxes. DirecTV's SWM (Single Wire Multi-switch technology--they are part of some Slimlines) and and Dish Network DishPro and ProPlus technologies are incompatible: DirecTV uses Channel Stacking Switch (CSS) technology while Dish uses Band Stacking Switch (BSS) technology. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Neither service installs legacy technology any longer.

Dish Network does have DishPro splitters, but they are used to spit one orbital line to allow two separate cables to be input into 2 separate multi-switches, or some other more complex installs that may require looking at 5 satellites, which is not the case for your situation. If you were to look at only ONE sat, your suggestion of a splitter could work. However, Dish Network services use a minimum of TWO satellites for all SD services: The Dish 500 that is a single reflector looking at 119 and 110, and it has been the standard install since 1999.

Each Dish STB requires its own cable. As for dual tuners, a single cable is run just a few inches from box sat connection, then into a small separator (not a splitter, but it looks like one) that has 2 cable outputs that each are connected to each sat tuner on the box.

Your user experience will be just like DirecTV. How each system performs its magic becomes irrelevant as the user experience is the same.

The 722 and 722K have larger HDD's, Picture-In-Picture feature in Single Mode, and offer a Dual Mode feature that can provide a 2nd TV experience without interfering with the TV1 operations--however the 2 tuners are spit between the TV1 and TV2 meaning each room functions like a SINGLE tuner DVR, and PIP feature is lost, but this is ONLY in Dual Mode. A one TV install would function in Single Mode providing the most flexibility.

612's have smaller HDD's, no PIP feature at all and no Dual Mode providing for the TV2 experience.

You can connect an external HDD for a ONE-TIME fee to add the feature and increase your storage that way. The one-time fee would make the external HDD feature available on ALL compatible boxes on your account. The external HDD recording feature offered on the 211 and 211K is a different feature and requires a separate fee.

The dual tuner external HDD feature works as storage, no streaming live recordings to it. You transfer recordings to the HDD to make more room on the 722/K's internal HDD for more recordings. The external HDD will playback all recordings, so you don't have to put them back on the 722/K's internal HDD to watch them, although you do have the option to put them back if you so wish.

I felt that somehow you wanted a bit of an explanation as to why they aren't going to be using any of your DirecTV parts, except, perhaps the one cable now going into your apt. as Dish and DirecTV have slightly different specs for the cables, but either should work well enough, but a smart installer is just gonna run an new line (as Dish recommends if it is possible and simple enough to do) and avoid possible problems in the future.

Good luck

You Should get Free HD for Life.

DishSubLA,

Thanks for your post, very helpful.

isaacmorse98,

Would like HD free for life but website checkout says I would have to sign up for auto pay and paperless billing. I don't mind paperless billing but auto pay not sure yet.

I take it that all this services require a 24 month commitment? I though dish also had a no commitment option but I didn't see that anywhere.

You would have to BUY all of your receivers to get no commitment. I have had no issues with autopay the six years I've had it. One less payment you have to deal with.

You can also get the free HD for life with a one time $99 fee. If you do not do that you end up paying $240 for HD service over the 2 year contract term ($10/month x 24 months). I would save the $41 and get HD for life when you sign up.

Also, get the receivers you want when you sign up - adding one later is not only more costly but also usually will require a NEW 24 month commitment. Better to do it all at the start, I waited to add a second receiver and should not have.

Welcome to Dish, this forum is a great resource for Dish info and rumors.

There won't be any extra fees. The 722 is included with your subscription and the 612
will have a second receiver fee no matter which receiver is your first. When the installer
comes just tell him you want to run the 722 in single mode on one TV and the 612 on
your other TV.

Mark,

Do you know if the installer will remove my D* dish and install the new one in the same spot? Basically I would want the D* one removed. Thanks for your last post too.

Dish charged me $200 for 'upgrade' when I moved!

DVR Fees - Will they continue forever?
