Going to set up a motorized dish this weekend. Using Coolsat 5000 and a QPH-031. I probably will need to put it up at the height of the roof line. Planning on getting a 12 foot pole and mounting it next to the roof. I am assuming that I will need to ground it, in case of weather. Any suggestions? Also, is there anything else that I need to be aware of when I do this?

thanks.....

Putting a 90cm dish on a 12 foot pole is like putting a wind sail on a 12 foot pole. #1. Unless the pole is made of balsa it will take alot of help to put it up there. #2 My suggestion would be mounting the dish on the side of the house or on the roof (make sure it goes through a stud). #3 If you do decide to put it on the pole, it does not need to be grounded because the pole is already it the ground (hence grounded).

Negative... Always ground your stuff.

If you go with a long pole attach the pole to the house at the eves or just under them to keep the pole rigid. The dish won't be able to use the entire pipe length as a lever this way.

p.s. listen to digiblur.

If you ground the dish, post or even set a 2nd grounding rod for the grounding block, make sure that it is bonded to the service ground for the home. Having a 2nd ground that is not bonded to the service ground can cause more damage than you are trying to prevent.

Having two grounds that are not bonded together can result in a deadly electrical potential. Electricity will follow the path of least resistance. That path might be through your body as you grab the coax cableand receiver case or an electrical surge might find that path of least resistance is through your satellite or AV equipment instead of to the service ground.

12 foot? Wow, that's not something I would envy when it comes to tweaking the dish's aim.

Well, when you take into account you are going to have to dig down a few feet to sink and stabilize the pole, I guess it's not so overwhelming sounding. But dang. :)

yes, please always ground your equipment. Keep the electrical potentials equalized and all should be good.
