722 DVR, what format does it record

I know about the external USB hard drive option and my question is what if I have a DVD that I have purchased and want to put the DVD in file form on the external hard drive so that I can play it from my DVR since its much more convenient that using a DVD player. What format does the DVR record in? Thanks in advance.

You cannot do that. The external drive is encrypted; and can not be used with a PC. It can only be used with the dish receiver, until it is reformatted.

But Dish programming is in either mpeg2 or mpeg4.

and transfer it to the external hard drive?

The external drive is encrypted by the Dish receiver, if you do transfer the dvd to the drive from your computer, it will be erased by the receiver.
