I ran across an interesting bug yesterday and today. I was watching "on the lot" with the CC on yesterday from the DVR. I recorded the show and played it back that night. I had this trouble throughout the entire show: It would randomly lose audio and sometimes "hitch" for a few seconds and then be normal for a few minutes then lose audio or hitch again.
At first I thought it was a reception issue. I recorded the show off the air (OTA) and if there is bad weather or high winds blowing the leaves around, I am a victim of multi-phase interferance. But it didn't look like Multi-phase to me. Multi-phase would cause the picture to break up and sometimes give me the annoying (loss of signal) screen on the recording telling me a few seconds were missed.
It looked like a computer with too much on its mind to me.
I really didn't feel like farting with it yesterday so I let it go and watched the show as it was. But today it was doing it again with the results show. But the show afterwards, "House" was perfect with no hitching. So that eliminates the reception 100% Same channel, same DVR, same weather. Nothing changed except the show.
So here I was scratching my head trying to figure out why the 622 would be hitching and dropping audio constantly during one show and not another. My brother suggested that it could be some sort of sub-carrier (like copy protection) or other such signal that caused the receiver to go nuts on the programs that would carry the signal. I couldn't argue with that. But continued to watch House.
Well after House it was time for letterman. Guess what? Different channel, different show, perfect reception... Hitch and audio drop-outs started happening on this show too! I discovered if I hit the "back" button, the hitches would not happen in the same spots so the program was recorded fine.
My brother and I were looking for anything that could explain this. We discussed the way the shows were produced. House is on Film, but the the broadcast show is on tape. "On the Lot" was live. David letterman is live-to-tape.
So what the hell could it be!
On a whim...asking myself "what is different now than when it works fine?" Closed captioning on House is pre-entered. CC on live and live-to-tape shows is entered on the fly... Could this be the sub-carrier that is making the receiver hitch and sputter like a 286 computer?
I turned off the CC and guess what... no hitching. No audio drop-outs. No problems whatsoever.
So this is my long way to say that the 622 has the following bug:
Turning on the Closed Captioning on live shows or live-to-tape programs could cause at 622 to have frequent audio drop-outs and picture freezes.
The receiver has the most current software. This bug was NOT present with the previous software version.
See ya
