First I appreciate everyone's comments to my April 16th posting. I WILL HEED YOUR ADVICE. Thank you! (I naively trusted that a new recorder with a 100 hour recording capability, used for 6 months, would be reliable. My mistake!)

You should complain to ceo@echostar.com about this. You shouldn't have to pay shipping because they sent you a defective receiver.
