TV technology just keeps marching on. In 2008, only 34% of American households owned a high-definition TV set. Today, even the smallest and cheapest TV available in your local electronics store comes with a modestly high-def 720p screen. And the basic HDTV sets are being squeezed out by an even higher-definition experience. Say hello to the 4K TV, also known as Ultra HD.

NHK recently published a three-year roadmap that entails the launch of 8K test broadcasting in 2016 with plans to roll out full 8K services by 2018.

Nearly everyone interviewed stressed the fact that the 8K broadcast service set to launch in 2018 is only the beginning. Beyond the initial launch, NHK plans full-spec 8K with 33 megapixels in each RGB channel, a 120-Hz frame rate, wide color gamut and 12-bit depth for each color, and high dynamic range (which was demonstrated at the recent IBC and CEATEC shows). Many of these features are expected to be available in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

NHK may as well throw in holograms... I just do not see the bandwidth appearing any time soon... The FCC is already squeezing together stations to clear out spectrum for the next round of cellular spectrum auctions... Major markets will have all the stations sharing subchannels...

Gigabit internet is popping up here and there but there is not the capacity to feed them...
