I'm curious, why is this lit up on the front of my receiver, I have a TV that is 720. Just wondering what the deal with that is.

Do you have native mode on? If you watching a non HDTV channel then the signal is in 480 and the directv reciver is in 480P mode. IF you watching HDTV and then your Reciver is in 480p mode when it should really be in 720P mode.

I'm new to HD so I don't want to sound stupid, but what is native mode??? I have the HD channels on and it still says 480p. It says that on every channel including the HD ones.

Well I hit the "RES" button on the front of the receiver and switched it to 720. Pictures looks the same to me.

Go to a HD cnhl like ESPNNews or even CBS HD right now with the NCAA on. What does the RES light "say" now?

How is your DirecTV connected to your TV?

Native mode is where you reciver sends what the channel's native resolution is. Resolution is the size of the picture sent to your tv. It sounds like your tv is not hooked up correctly. Are you hooked in via HDMI (one cable from your HDMI port to your tv) or Componant (red green blue cables hooked from your reciver to your tv.) You want it hooked up via HDMI if possible.

Also, keep the format to the native format of your tv wich is 720P. there are 3 formats wich are 1080 I / P 720P, and 480 I/P. The best is 1080p but other than Bluray or HDDVD, no 1080P content is avaiable from satellite. 1080I is your next best source wich is what satellite carries allong with 720P.

This link will get you hooked up on all the technical info and is good reading :)

Thanks for the feedback fellas. It's hooked up via HDMI, just the one cable from the receiver to the TV. I changed the resolution on the box to 720 and since then it's just stayed that way. I mean the HD looks good on the HD channels as far as I can tell.

You may want to go into the settings for the receiver and disable/uncheck the boxes for 480i/p so that only HD-level signals are passed on to your TV. If you watch a non-HD program, your box will upconvert the signal to the lowest available/matching resolution you have allowed in the settings.

When I had my 2nd HR20 installed several months ago, the installer had intentionally go into the settings and disbaled everything except 480p, claiming that it was the ideal setting for watching HD. I just nodded and let him leave then immediately went and undid what he had done. So if you never touched those resolution settings, you may want to double check them.

If this had happened at my house, he would have been directly to the street.
