HERE TO HELP YOU!
The International 3D Society has announced that while 3D remains its "top priority," it is expanding its name and mission to address Ultra HD TV, laser projection and other emerging imaging technologies.
Dolby 3D glasses-free 3D technology is expected to make its way into consumer products in early 2014.

I predict even less success for Ultra HD in the home theater than 3D has had.

With UltraHD you can build a TV with a large angular subtense from the viewing position, AND make it a passive (polarized) 3D set. I think that would make 3D more compelling than current generation sets.

The biggest issue with passive 3D is that TV's larger than 46" really suffer the black lines in the image, especially when you view up close to achieve a wider scale of view. I want a 4K 65" Passive 3DTV but only when the prices come down to something reasonable ~$2K.

I am much less enthusiastic about OLED TV's after seeing them. The high glossy finish in the blacks and other dark colors display high reflective mirror like properties which is distracting in a room with lights. It is OK in a completely dark room all black to cut those reflections and glare. The color change with age is another problem that will keep them off the market until that issue is resolved. That might be like the first plasma sets with the burn in problem people hated.

I agree, UHD & 3D may make it together. But frankly, even though most folks won't be able to perceive the higher resolution or notice the expanded color gamut (if that is ever utilized), marketing might well ensure UHD success.

Im looking forward to 2160p, I think it has a huge opportunity with the large screens were are getting nowadays. I've been meaning to ask, but maybe this answers it. Do we want to keep 2160p discussion in here (3D forum)?

I've asked about starting a 4K forum, but wasn't met with enthusiasm at this time. Maybe a little down the road when things shake out. I'd like to see some reconfiguring in the HT forums. Too many players in the HD media section and not in the hardware section where they should go. I'm waiting on a projector with the next gen HDMI. It doesn;t make a difference for movies, but it will for video. Not really wanting to do four 1.3 cables like the JVC set and the RED player for 60p. Also waiting to see if limiting 4K service by Sony to only Sony connected devices has any effect. Also waiting to see who will be coming out with services. A lot to wait for. Not jumping on the early adopters on this one.

Me either, Im done with video upgrade for now (other than maybe a new blu-ray player here and there ;) ) until 2160p and OLED shake out. If plasma goes another few years, I may grab a panny before they go in the sunset it if there is a reason to, but things are hitting diminishing returns.

We really do need to consolidate the forums here, or rearrange. 3D and HD sections can be confusing, especially with where should you put the player threads (since they are all 2D and 3D now).

A 4K or 2160 forum might be a good idea later on when there is more specific discussion on the topic. And except for a rare few mfg's all these 2160 TV's will be 3D capable.

People need to stop thinking of 3D as a direction TV is heading but rather a feature we enable when a 3D program is offered. We choose to see it in 3D or not. It's like 5.1 or 7.1 audio. Don't have to listen to it if stereo is all you have.

Likewise, the 4K TV's will not be beneficial with small screens. It's purpose will be achieved with larger screens. Same with 8K someday. However, the 4K and 3D will be better with passive sets and offer something for the 3D enthusiast. I know I would benefit from a 4K 32" Passive3DTV because I can see the black lines in the image already when viewing 3D. 4K eliminates those with the higher more film like resolution for even smaller 3DTV's

It might be best to to start combining some of this then. It would make more sense to have something like "Media" and then "Players" for sections. No need for 3D, Blu-ray, HD media and players IMO.

And I agree on 3D its like built in wifi, etc..., its a feature and everything has it now (just about).
